Why Is Ageism Wrong
Imagine getting fired from your job or getting disrespected because you’re 40 or older. This is going on in today’s society. There are many elders in America that are getting fired from their jobs or not getting jobs because they are too old. Us Americans need to realize that these people have rights too. Ageism is bad; it is in companies and because of this we had to make laws to control age discrimination from getting out of hand.
First, ageism occurs in our society many ways and it needs to stop as soon as possible. Age discrimination robs seniors of choice, independence, and dignity (“Ageism”). Beauty and young age is highly valued by American’s (“Ageism”). In society we don’t think have the same abilities as younger beings so we don’t treat them well (“//.ageism: concepts and theories”). Us American’s need to realize, that elders are as important as young adults.

Business owners think that old people are less valuable, and the owners don’t want to pay for retirement funds (“//.ageism: concepts and theories”). When businesses make advertisements they say not for people over 40, but the company needs to notice that half the consumers are (“Ageism”). Although elders are very wise and smart, managers think they are less productive and uptight (“Ageism”). Managers are losing money, not saving when they discriminate in their business.
Finally, because age discrimination is getting out of hand, our government made the A.D.E.A. The A.D.E.A stands for Age Discrimination Employment Act. This act protects people 40 and older from getting discriminated and rejected from jobs, or not let someone get a job because they are older than 40 (“Age Discrimination”). When companies advertise for a job they can’t limit the age (“Ageism”). The A.D.E.A has protected many individuals from getting discriminated and will continue to help more

(Schaefer, 2012) It is a set of beliefs, attitudes, norms, and values used to justify age based prejudice, discrimination, and subordination. This may be casual or systematic.
