This quote is significant because it shows the importance Owen had on Johnny’s life. As a result of his premature birth, Owen had an "unnatural" size and "wrecked" voice, but instead of seeing his size and voice as disabilities, he saw them as something that made him unique and worthy in God's eyes. The fact that Johnny is “doomed” to remember him instantly makes it clear that Owen’s influence goes farther than childhood, and may not always be…

While most people might take offense at being labeled as a loner, Aquarius don’t mind one bit. They prefer to be by themselves and their favorite moments of the day are the ones filled with silence. They are incredibly smart people and hard-working, so you will probably find that many Aquarius people are lawyers because they don’t mind working long hours and they also don’t mind making people mad. Even though they don’t like confrontation, they will go head-to-head with someone if it means that they’re sticking up for what they believe in. You will probably see this zodiac sign the least in social situations because an Aquarius would rather spend the night alone than go to a party where they have to make meaningless chit chat.…

The Roman Catholic Church is something my family and I are familiar with. In Los Angeles I went to a co-ed Catholic school called St. Eugene. When I first picked up the book I was excited to find out the back story of the organization of Las Hermanas. “In the forefront of liberation of the Mexican American community are beautiful and courageous women, women who know how to fight,” Canciόn de Las Hermanas. That quote summarizes the movement dealing with Latina women in the Catholic Church.…

“He is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany,” (Irving, 1). These were John’s first words of the book, and it nicely represents what the whole book is going to be about. Religious faith, including fate destined by God, is the leading theme in A Prayer for Owen Meany. Many characters, especially John Wheelwright and Owen Meany, undergo a series of events in their lives that make them question, or justify the existence of God in a world where there is no obvious evidence. Every scene that happens in the book has significance and is part of Owen’s destiny and fate, which was believed to be mapped out by God. Owen is the main focus of the novel and is who demonstrates this theme very well. His appearance, visions, dreams, ideas, and acts are each at some point in the story demonstrated to be God’s will- “...I AM GOD’S INSTRUMENT,” (Irving, 337) as Owen put it. It is all of this which explains Owen’s thinking of himself and God, as well as it helps John resolve his faith. Throughout their childhood together and adult life, Owen does and says things that don’t always quite make sense to John, but always give him a sense that there is something else in the world besides people. When Owen’s life on Earth culminates, everything begins to have reason, his appearance, visions, and practices. Owen believed in fate and that he was put into the world for a purpose, known only by God, until it happened. John was always confused about what he believed in, until he witnesses Owen’s miracle save, he suddenly believes. However, he also becomes angry with God.…

He is distant, ambitious, and cold, denouncing his family while remaining close to people who can help him achieve his goals. He is ruthless in his pursuit of success, and extremely smart. The tactics he uses in the world of society are effective, but seem to stem from the part of him that is the “self,” or the part of him that is more nature-oriented. He is the type of unattached, adventurous person that McCandless describes in his letter, and because of this he survives much longer on the island than an ordinary person would, just as McCandless uses his philosophy on life and nature to survive in the wild.…
