Why Is Beowulf An Epic Hero

Beowulf is considered an epic hero for all his battles in his book “Beowulf”. Beowulf was known for many battles, but I the book he was in three epic battles. Some of his battles include killing five sea monsters, Grendel, and his own son. He also was known to have fought and killed Grendel’s mother, even though he didn’t. He also became the king of Herot. Him being an epic hero is why he was laid in the tower, that the Geats had built him, with all the treasures from Grendel’s mothers lair. The first event that is part of why Beowulf is known to be an epic hero is his battle with five sea monsters. Beowulf was in a swimming race with Breca across one sea. When they were almost to their boats, they began to be attacked by five sea monsters. Beowulf had pulled out his dagger and began to stab the monsters in the eyes, cutting down their throats and if they were to swallow him, he cut though their eyes. Beowulf says that he lost the swimming race due to him fighting and killing five sea monsters alone, without Breca’s help. Another reason Beowulf is seen as an epic hero, was because of his Battle against Grendel, Hrothgar’s son. Grendel was known to attack the mead-halls when Hrothgar had celebrations and sang songs.
