Why Is Bill C-51 Necessary

Undeniably, Bill C-51 is necessary to fight against terrorist acts, especially because no one in the world should have to live in fear and worry about their safety. However, even though this bill protects Canadians, it should not do so by violating the rights and freedoms of the people who are being protected. In order for this bill to fulfill its purpose of protecting Canadians without infringing on their rights, it requires improvements that eliminate the imperfections of this bill. The best improvements for this bill is to honour and respect the privacy of citizens and to find an alternative that does not violate the rights and freedom of anybody. Another right the bill violated was the Freedom of Thought, Belief, Opinion and Expression provision under section 2b of the Charter of Rights and Freedom. An individual can violate this bill simply by speaking their opinion and if the authorities believe that it’s in support of terrorist attacks, they will be detained. The violation of section 9 is also an important issue as Bill C-51 gives officers the legal power to arrest an individual without a warrant they feel may carry out a terrorist act. A way to combat these violations is for there to be more clarity and guideline for the authorities in the bill. The bill should illutrate better efforts in deciphering who is a suspect and who actually is not one. Though there is no clear-cut way to catch a terrorist, there should be some guidelines on typical suspicious behavior to avoid leaving everything to the discretion of the officers or authorities. An alternative for the arrests would be to arrest individuals that the authorities have evidence against. This would cause the authorities to do more research; however, there needs to be concrete proof that the person is conducting a suspicious activity to be in accordance with the people’s
