It all clicked when Scout finally met Boo Radley behind Jem’s door, hidden in the corner. This was after he saved Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell and carried Jem home. “A strange small spasm shook him, as if he heard fingernails scrape slate, but as I gazed at him in wonder the tension slowly drained from his face. His lips parted into a timid smile, and our neighbor’s image blurred with my sudden tears. ‘Hey, Boo,’ I said” (Lee, 270). Scout had figured out that it was Boo who had saved her and her brother, that it was Boo who gave her the blanket after the fire, and that how they thought about him was completely wrong. He wasn't monstrous at all, he was kind and…
I envision the kids not wanting to meet Boo because they are terrified of him. Stories about Boo include the stabbing of his family member, and him being in a gang. I imagine the children not wanting to talk to him because of his house and the instances surrounding the house. One instance of the house is the poisonous pecans on the side of his lawn. When playing ball, if the ball is hit in the Radley yard it is…
In the very first chapter, the town’s view of Boo is explained to newcomer Charles Baker “Dill” Harris (10-16). The very first words Scout used to describe him were “malevolent phantom”. She goes on to say that the town blames him for a number of late night misgivings, such as frozen azaleas and small crimes. In one case, where pets and chickens had been slaughtered in the night, Boo was suspected, even though “Crazy Addie” was the known culprit. One page 12, Scout further describes Boo’s childhood, and how he fell in “the wrong crowd”, according to “neighborhood legend”. After they got into some trouble with the law, Mr. Radley started keeping Boo inside. Fifteen years later, Miss Stephanie Crawford claims that while Boo was scrapbooking, he stabbed his father’s leg. It was then, that someone suggested an asylum. His father decided instead to let them imprison Boo for a little while. After he was moved back home, Boo wasn’t seen again. The less of him that was seen the more rumors circulated about him. Jem told Dill on page 15 that Boo “goes out, all right, when its pitch dark.” Pages 16 and 60 give evidence to Miss Stephanie Crawford exclaiming that he watched her through her window. For those who do not know, Miss Crawford is seen as the town gossip in the novel. Also on page 16 Jem describes Boo Radley as being “six-and-a-half feet tall” with blood stained hands, a jagged scar across his face, few rotted yellow teeth, wide popping eyes, and he “drooled most of…
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird the character “Boo” Radley is portrayed as an evil and creepy specter of a person who prowls the neighborhood at dusk as if to remain invisible to the outside world around him who would otherwise judge and reticule him. He is thought to be all of these horrible accusations as well as others such as dangerous and prone to violence when in reality he is a mockingbird, a symbol of good and innocence . It is not until the end of the novel that Boo’s true character is reviled when he saves the Finch children from a truly evil man who wishes to harm or even kill them. Boo’s arrival seems to serve as a sense of justice in a time much deserving of it.…
Boo Radley symbolises a beautiful, but tortured mockingbird that is misunderstood and ostracised by both his family and the wider community. He is kept as a prisoner in his own home, kept in confinement by his god-fearing Baptist family. Despite this treatment Boo remains gentle and harmless. However, people tell stories about how he eats squirrels and cats and poisons the pecan nuts in the school yard. To the community Boo is a "malevolent phantom". Gradually Scout and Jem begin to see things from Boo's perspective. Like the mockingbird Boo gives pleasure and comfort: for example, the gifts in the tree, the blanket placed around their shoulders as they watch Miss Maudie's home go up in flames. Finally, he saves Scout and Jem's lives. In turn, Scout realises to drag Boo into the limelight would be like "shootin' a mockingbird" and a cruel betrayal of all the inherent goodness Boo symbolises as a mockingbird.…
Boo Radley, a simple man that is mentally handicapped, has never seen society or the light…
Long term isolation and Boo’s reclusive personality causes him to have no friends. Boo tries to reach out to the children by leaving them gifts in the knothole of a tree for them to discover. Obviously, Boo treasures the gifts a lot. Even though 2 Indian-head pennies are worth a fortune, he is still willing to give them to the children because he wants them to be fascinated by the gifts just as he does. Boo shows kindness to the children when Jem and Scout are watching Miss Maudie’s house go up in flames. As mentioned in the story, “'Thank who?' I (Scout) asked. 'Boo Radley. You were so busy looking at the fire you didn't know it when he put the blanket around you.'” Boo is courageous and protective, he saves Jem and Scout from being killed by Bob Ewell. Above incidents proves Boo Radley, after all, is not a harmful person described by Maycomb people, in fact he is caring and…
Since they were very little, Jem and Scout have always heard stories Boo Radley killing people, attempting to kill his father, and peeping in people's windows at night. Jem, Scout, and Dill assumed that all of these stories were correct and they try almost every summer to lure him out of his house. Then near the end of the novel, Boo comes out of his house to save Jem and Scouts lives. While spending those short few minutes with Boo, Scout realizes that Boo was never the man that the town made him out to be, he was simply shy and he did not like to come out of his house. Everyone judged him before they even knew him.…
Have you ever known what it is like to constantly do good things but never rewarded? Never acknowledged? Always assumed to be bad? To be a mockingbird means to not cause any harm to the society and do good deeds. Most mockingbirds don’t even want to be recognized. Boo Radley is a perfect example of a metaphorical mockingbird. Not everyone knows what being misunderstood is like; especially when you’re misunderstood for the wrong reasons. Just because a man keeps to himself, should he be marked as an outcast? Just because a man is rumored to have done a dark deed, should he live a lonely life? Boo Radley, a man who has been labeled by a myth, truly encompasses the qualities of a mockingbird. His status as an outcast not only leads to his misunderstood reputation, but also to his self-dependent, lonely lifestyle. Yet, the town doesn’t know he’s a harmless man who just keeps to himself. This misunderstood citizen of Maycomb, who all in all, ends up being a harmless stranger trying to help, resembles a metaphorical mockingbird.…
At the start of the story we (the audience) are introduce to the main characters; Atticus, Jem, Boo Radley, Robert Ewell, Scout, Tom Robinson, Calpurnia, and more. Boo Radley in “To Kill a Mocking Bird” is the character that we 1st get to see being judge. Jem and Scout see Boo Radley at first as nothing but a “malevolent phantom" (chapter 1 pg. 8) it states “Inside the house lived a malevolent phantom” Everything that surrounds Boo Radley would be the rumors and myths. Boo Radley seems to have never came out his house unless it was needed for. As Boo Radley saved Jem and Scout from being killed by Bob Ewell, we (the readers) finally get an actually inside look into Boo Radley. Him saving them (Jem and Scout) showed that he is actually a humane person who puts others 1st before himself, who isn’t what the townspeople say he is. When he performed that act of heroism, both Jem’s and Scout’s views had been understood towards him; really realizing that Boo…
Boo Radley Character Analysis: From Town Monster to Childhood Hero In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Boo Radley is depicted as a character that is innocent, protective, and misunderstood. Boo is an innocent man, he has childish tendencies, and through his actions, shows friendliness. As a child, Boo never had the chance to properly grow up and mature because he was mentally unstable. His erratic behavior led to him being locked inside his house.…
Arthur Radley in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” was abused as a child, yes he was a troublemaker but at the same time his family neglected him. In the book Arthur Radley’s father decides not to send Arthur away from trouble he was causing, instead they decided to just separate him from the rest of the world “The sheriff hadn't the heart to put him in jail alongside the negroes, so Boo was locked in the courthouse basement” (Lee 14.) After a while mold of…
But through all this Boo Radley is a very kind hearted person. He isn’t the creepy guy everyone makes him out to be. He truly cares for the kids. He is just a tough person to get to know because he is so shy. Early in the book Scout asked Miss Maudie about him and she said he was always a perfect gentleman to her. Also he gave Scout the blanket when Miss Maudie’s house was on fire, when Scout was shivering in the cold night. He gave her the blanket without her realizing it. My third reason is, he did save both Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell by stabbing him. He also carried Jem to the house and stayed at the house until he knew that Jem was okay.…
Boo Radley is a mysterious character that is described in a lot of detail by Scout. The Radley house is scary to the children. There is a lot of mystery around Boo, there does not seem to be a lot of facts. It is said that he only comes out of his house in the middle of the night.…
Even at the end of the story, Boo Radley does yet another kind act of saving the children from getting harmed by Bob Ewell. He risked his life to save the children when he could’ve stayed in his house like usual and kept quiet. Instead, he purposely came out of his house to deal with a problem that wasn’t his. Although he could’ve been praised from doing such a brave act, Atticus and Mr. Tate decide to keep it a secret, since Boo would not be comfortable with the attention. Scout also behaves kindly towards Boo, making sure he’s as comfortable as possible in this awkward situation.…
