However, Buddhism would not have become so widespread if it were not for King Ashoka. In the beginning, Buddhism was only an Indian religion. However, after King Ashoka had spent a lot of his time fighting in battlefields to be able to rule more land, he decided it was time to end all the violence after witnessing a horrifying event. From that moment on he started to act in a nonviolent way and even began to speak out about many Buddhist values. King Ashoka wanted to spread these new principles to many areas past India, and he placed many stone columns that had inscriptions of his principles all over the land. By the act that King Ashoka had done he helped developed the widespread of Buddhism. This important historical event in Buddhism has helped Buddhism become a highly influential religion. Because Buddha’s teachings and Buddhist schools had started to spread outside of India, this caused multiple branches in the religion to rise. The three main branches of Buddhism are Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Buddhist believes that humans do not have a soul but are still able to be reborn from one lifetime to another. The Buddhist tie this in with their belief in karma, which is saying that based on the actions one makes in life, good or bad, will determine the type of life they will be reborn into. Buddhist believes that humans are meant to suffer as they say that to live is to suffer. Buddhist are taught to learn how to overcome suffering by following the Noble Eightfold Paths which are eight steps of good actions in hopes that one day they will reach their goal of ending suffering. Buddhist are reincarnated repeatedly while following the Noble Eightfold Paths until they finally reach Nirvana. Nirvana is a state where there is no suffering nor desire, it is where they reach inner peace. Nirvana is where the Buddhists believe in ending the cycle of reincarnation and karma. Reincarnation and Nirvana have remained as one of Buddhism’s biggest belief that it has helped keep the religion of Buddhism going. Like in the religion Hinduism, Buddhist suggests in Samsara which is saying that the world is ever-changing and always in a state of pain and decay. This idea helps keep the belief in one day reaching Nirvana strong as it continues to encourage people to try to make good actions throughout one humans lifetime so that they are able to avoid bad karma and being reincarnated
