Over the course of its history, Canada has progressed immensely regarding its autonomy. Starting out as just a colony of Great Britain, Canada was in the control of the overarching British Empire. However, Canada now has emerged as a sovereign state, in control of its own future. A major contributing factor to Canada ultimately reaching autonomy has been its participation in war and peacekeeping efforts. Contributions made in war efforts such as WWI and WWII have allowed Canada to demonstrate just how influential and powerful the country can be. Even though Canada entered WWI under the order of Great Britain, Canada’s showing at the battle of Vimy Ridge helped it emerge as a more independent country, gaining its own seat in the League of Nations. After participation in World War Two, Canada once again progressed in independence and earned the right to be a founding member in both NATO and the UN. Along with wars, Canada has made many contributions to peacekeeping. Canadian Prime Minister, Lester B. Pearson, is considered a founder of modern peacekeeping after his efforts in the Suez Canal Crisis during the Cold War Era.…

The act of warfare has never been and will most likely never be celebrated and perceived as a beneficial act for humanity. In most instances throughout history, the act of war has represented loss of life, a loss to great for any wartime triumph to overcome. Despite the negative connotations that warfare implies, a nation which goes through a major war can often emerge positively transformed. The Second World War represents a colossal juncture in Canada’s history as a nation. The war propelled Canada into the latter part of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century as one of the prodigious, western industrialized nations. From an economical standpoint, the Second World War ignited Canada’s ascension into a fully modern and mechanized country. Furthermore, the war changed the social landscape of Canada, fully transforming the roles of women and evolving the immigration policy, which eventually lead to Canada becoming one of the most culturally diverse and interracial nations by modern accounts.…

During the 20th century, there were many events and situations that helped define the country of Canada. There were positive moments, but also a good amount of negative ones. Of course, the successful events kept Canadians in a positive light, but the negative situations helped Canada learn from its mistakes and went to prove how strong and brave its citizens were/are. The three most defining moments would have to be the Dieppe Raid, the Invasion of Normandy, and the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Yes, I agree with the United Nations about their decision to rank Canada as one of the best countries to live in. Canada is a wonderful place to live thanks to how diverse it is. This country is filled with people from different cultures and backgrounds, which is why it is sometimes called a ‘ cultural mosaic’. Being a cultural mosaic means that we allow every culture to keep their identity instead of telling them to conform to a certain way of life. The people…

Multiculturalism is an important thing in Canada’s culture. Canada takes pride in the different cultures we have today. Some examples of cultures we have are: Caribbean, Asian, and European cultures. The Japanese people in Canada are proud of their culture. Their past, though, was very rough because their country, along with Germany, was part of World War II, playing as the enemies. Both countries wanted to build great empires, so they started to attack many countries in Europe and Asia, expanding their territory, and that’s how the war started. During this war, Japanese people living in Canada, also known as Japanese Canadians, were treated badly because other Canadians thought of them as traitors and enemies. In this essay, I will be talking about the history on how the Japanese were treated during the war, the rights that they were given, and what happened to the Japanese after the war.…

The Canadian military as peacekeepers is a very prominent notion of the majority of Canadians. It is what distinguishes Canada most strongly from the United States, and what has become an important aspect of their foreign policy. Peacekeeping, since the conclusion of the Cold War, however, is a myth. This essay will explore the history of peacekeeping, its use as a tool during the Cold War, and Canada's very prominent role in its development and use. Peacekeeping, in the traditional sense of the word, ended in the 1980s.…
