Why Is Ceres Important

Ceres was one of the greatest and the most important goddess. Ceres was the goddess of agriculture, and she was Roman. She was one of the greatest and the most important goddess because all of the other gods and goddess relied on her. They relied on her because she was the goddess of agriculture, so she had to feed them. Ceres was the daughter of Saturn and Ops, and she was the sister of Jupiter, Pluto, Neptune, Vesta, and Juno. Ceres was the mother of Proserpine, and Proserpine’s father was Jupiter, Ceres’ brother. Ceres has many reasons why she is one of the greatest and the most important goddess. The first reason why Ceres is one of the greatest and the most important goddess is that even today, her personality is shown in modern day. The personality that is shown in modern day is that in
the Fall, plants lose their leaves because of the story of her daughter. Another personality that is shown in modern day is that it can also represent Winter because of the story of her daughter. Today everyone respects agriculture, but the Romans did more than just respects agriculture, the worship agriculture. The second reason why Ceres is one of the greatest and the most important goddess is that she has symbols, sacred animals, and colors that represent her. The symbols that represented Ceres were the poppy, torch, wheat seed and grains, and the coronucopia. The sacred animals that associated with Ceres is a bull, sow, or a sheep. The color that represents Ceres is white. The color is white because the white and a torch represents the search for the goddess for her daughter, Proserpine. It is also white because during the time of the search for her daughter was snow. Ceres also has really interesting stories about her and her daughter. A story that is interesting about her and her daughter together is when Jupiter, Ceres brother, gave Pluto, god of the underworld, the approval to date her daughter. Once Ceres heard about this, she got pissed. Later on, Jupiter realized that he messed up and tries to get her daughter back from the underworld. But, Pluto secretly gave her food before she left, and once you had eaten that food, you stay in the underworld forever. Since her daughter was married to Pluto, and Pluto gave her the food she couldn’t leave. Since Jupiter did this and Ceres was sad and frustrated, Ceres did not grow any of the crops. If Ceres couldn’t grow crops, than no one was able to eat. But, Pluto made a deal with her and the deal was that Ceres and Proserpine had to visit him every year for three months. When Ceres and Proserpine went to the underworld for three months, no crops grew and so that is how the season winter came because during those three months nothing grew. The third reason why Ceres is one of the greatest and the most important goddess in mythology was because without her the gods and the goddess would not be able to eat.
Since her Roman counterpart was Demeter, and Demeter was the actual goddess of agriculture than Ceres was the protector of all the activities of the agricultural cycle. For example, Ceres was the one that watered it everyday and gave it sunlight. This is why she is important to mythology because without her protection of the agriculture, the gods and goddess would die of starvation. Ceres was one of the goddess responsible for life itself. Ceres was the one that showed humans how to grow wheat. The last reason why Ceres was one of the greatest and the most important goddess of mythology was that all of the gods and goddesses worshipped her. A way that they worshipped her was by all of the Rome’s many agricultural gods and goddesses, she was the only one who was named as part of the Dii Consentes, the Roman equivalent to the Greek’s Olympian, their leading gods and goddesses. Ceres was not just a ordinary goddess, her role as a goddess impacted other gods and goddesses
lives. This is why Ceres was one of the most important goddess during that time. Ceres to the other gods and goddesses was like a mother to them. She had to take care of them like feeding them. Without her the gods and goddesses would not of lived for a long time. It is weird how she is the mother to other gods because Zeus was the god of gods and how Ceres took care of Zeus.
