Why Is Civic Engagement Important To Me
To me, civic engagement means making a positive difference in the community. It is recognizing that you are part of a bigger community and that you have a responsibility to better the lives of all those around you. You are responsible for everyone in your community. It means helping a neighbor out when their house burns down. It means volunteering your time to help out local organizations. It means casting a ballot in every election. Civic engagement is important to me because I think it is our duty to be active and engaged members of our community. We need to understand the problems in our community and work to better it.

One community I felt I belonged to in high school was the Junior State of America (JSA), a national student-run organization

Voting is a necessary obligation of a U.S. citizen because by voting you are voicing your opinion about who you believe should be the leader of our nation. By voting you are expressing your hard earned rights as an American. You are also letting the government know what your thoughts and opinions are when it comes to the matter you are voting on because the government looks to you as an individual when it comes to electing the next leader of our country. Not all people have always had the privileges to go out and vote. Women and non-white males have not always been eligible to vote, so by voting they are showing the sacrifices and obstacles that they have overcome to now voice their opinions by being able to vote. Voting is a way for people…

Community service does not have just one single meaning; it has many. Community service means something different to every person in the world. To me, community service means helping not only your community, but also your school, state and country. It means to be kind and caring to others, to help out those who are less fortunate then you. Community service is when you take time out of your life to do something that will better other people. Looking down the list of community service activities I have done, I thought one of them was the most significant one. I call it, “The Community Service in the Heart of Hurricane Sandy.”…

Student engagement is the referring to allowing students to take initiative to conduct themselves in a manner that allows them to express their feelings as well as their opinions while social responsibility is taking action in a problem that affects the world or society they live in. In school, I make it my job to demonstrate student engagement as well as social responsibility. Because of this, I am able to participate in organizations like the National Honor Society that will allow me to take leadership, as vice president, in planning events such as Relay for Life and Coat and Food drives. Through these events, not only I but all students are able to contribute to the well being of others. Which allow students to become involved with their community.…

My unique understanding of social justice and community engagement is inextricably related to my understanding of opportunity-- specifically opportunity that is granted through education and mentorship. In my first semester at Cornell, I participated in AVID, a program that provides students at Ithaca High School (in demographic groups typically underrepresented in colleges and universities) with tutors at Cornell University. This semester, in addition to my work in AVID, I will be working in the Cornell Prison Education Program-- which helps to grant educational opportunity to Auburn Correctional Facility prisoners, through coursework provided by Cornell. As an OADI FIC Mobilizer, I hope to organize and inspire my peers at Cornell to use their…
