Why Is Cowboy Casanova Monologue
Cowboy Casanova

You better take it from me
That boy is like a disease
You're runnin' and tryin' and tryin' to hide
And you're wondering why you can't get free
He's like a curse; he's like a drug
You get addicted to his love
You wanna get out, but he's holding ya down
'Cause you can't live without one more touch

He's a good time cowboy Casanova
Leaning up against the record machine
He looks like a cool drink of water
But he's candy-coated misery
He's the devil in disguise
A snake with blue eyes
And he only comes out at night
Gives you feelings that you don't wanna fight
You better run for your life

I see that look on your face
You ain't hearing what I say
So I'll say it again 'cause I been where ya been
And I know how it ends, you can't get

The book, finding fish, is a poignant autobiography of the life of Antwone Quenton Fisher, an African American boy who suffered a tumultuous childhood in a foster care setting. He was born on 8-3-1959 in a Cleveland prison to Eva Mae Fisher. She was incarcerated for the shooting death of his father, her boyfriend at the time, Eddie Elkins. Initially, he spent his first few weeks of his life in a Cleveland orphanage. Then he was fostered by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Nellie Strange. She lovingly cared for him for two years. One 10-11-1961 he was placed in the foster home of the Reverend and Mrs. Pickett, an African American couple who came from southern black heritage. Mr. Pickett was a kind man with a doctorate in medicine and his wife, the abuser, was the matriarch of the family. For the next eighteen years of Antwone’s life, he would suffer terrible physical, verbal and emotional abuse in this home, even though he would have a total of thirteen social workers “monitoring” his case. In the Pickett’s home, Antwone had three foster siblings; Flo, Dwight and Keith. Antwone suffers so much chronic abuse that he never feels confident enough to tell any of his social workers about his abuse. He is even sexually abused by Willenda, a babysitter who cares for the children at times. Antwone is finally kicked out of the home around his sixteenth birthday and he finds himself at George Junior Republic, a reform school for boys. Even though he isn’t a trouble maker, he loves being there because he finds teachers who really mentor him. While he lives there, he is able to take tests and graduate early from high school. Unfortunately now he has “graduated’ from the foster care system since he is eighteen and he is forced to become homeless and sell drugs for money. The best thing that ever happens to him is when he enrolls in the United States Navy. While serving an eleven year term, he develops…

    Diction In The Rattler

    • 536 Words
    • 3 Pages

The author’s diction heightens the power and force behind the snake as it responds to the man. When the man first stumbles across the rattlesnake, it is “undulant” while “waiting” and holding its ground in calm “watchfulness.” The diction conveys slight tension in the otherwise still setting. The atmosphere feels tranquil, and while the snake is cautious, it is still at ease. This tranquility disappears, however, as the man attacks, and the snake “shoots” into a dense bush and shakes its “furious” signal after a “twitch” of its tail. The snake’s movements show much more power than they did before the man attacked. In turn, the atmosphere becomes more tense as the snake becomes more forceful. The diction describing the snake before and after the man attacks creates a contrast…

The snake is a common factor in a number of James Dickey’s poems. In many cultures, snakes are associated with death. In Egypt, snakes were used for sinister purposes such as murder and suicide. In Greek mythology, snakes were often associated with deadly presences. Medusa, the Gorgon, had snakes growing from her head instead of hair. In Christianity, the Serpent tempted Adam and Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. God cursed the Serpent “above all animals”…

    Rattler Diction

    • 604 Words
    • 3 Pages

The speaker’s choice of respectful diction toward the snake portrayed the rattlesnake to being a fair opponent. The snake was “capable of long range attack and armed with powerful fangs” yet it did not move in response to the speaker until he had initiated an “unprovoked attack” on the snake. The speaker describes the snake to have power and the ability to attack with a likely chance of accuracy – this indicated that the rattler was not helpless but in fact the complete opposite because it could have easily attacked first. The natural recoil the snake had in response to the speaker’s first attack shows that the snake had not expected combat because the rattler had done nothing to “provoke” him, showing the powerful snake had not initiated the first hit but must defend itself for its own life. When the speaker had brought out his weapon, the snake had “shot” into the bushes and “shook and shook his fair but furious signal”. The snake’s hiding from the man usually shows cowardice, but describing the snake to have “shot” into hiding illustrates its speed – as if the snake were like a bullet. His hiding in the bushes was not an intention of cowardice but was later shown in the sentence almost as if a desperate call for peace when the snake repeatedly “shook and shook” his “fair but furious” rattler. Repeating the word “shook” puts an emphasis to indicate its desperation while the rattler was calling for a “fair” warning with its rattler, but once…
