Why Is Greek Mythology Important

Greek mythology is interesting because it was the Ancient Greeks’ way of interpreting the world they live in. The myths were fictional, but the Ancient Greeks believed it was true and based their lives on it. Furthermore, there are many different forms of myths, such as religious myths, myths of origins, gods, heroes, seasonal renewal, and myths involving animal transformation. Legends are similar to myths, however, legends actually happened in history. Some Greek myths are folktales because they have recurring themes and serves to entertains us. Another unique fact is that the myths were orally passed down during the Bronze Age. There is no original text for the myths, so as years go by, many Greek writers and artists elaborate to the stories, and hence create different versions. These are the reasons why Greek mythology is fascinating.
As stated before, the myths were like an answer to their questions about the world. In addition, the myths can also teach people a lesson, entertain them, explain political and religious rituals, justify an existing social system, and identify a group or culture. Furthermore, the Greeks believe in myths so strongly that they worship the gods/goddesses very frequently to earn their favor and avoid punishments. As a result, the heroes, gods, goddesses, monsters, etc. in the myths have essentially became a part of their daily lives. In Greek literature, the writers usually doesn’t introduce the main characters(gods) because the readers are already very familiar with them. An example can be Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey.
