Why Is Hamlet A Good King

Hamlet is a play by William Shakespeare, set in Denmark after the mysterious death of the Old King and the quick marriage between the Queen and the Old King’s brother. Hamlet is obsessed with the figuring out whether Claudius, the brother, was the killer. The play ends tragically with the many deaths including Hamlet and he never has the opportunity to reign, Fortinbras ends the play by stating “bear Hamlet like a soldier to the stage, for he was likely, had he been put on, to have proved most royal” (5.2.386). Hamlet has many qualities of a great king, and many of a bad one. Interpreting his qualities can lead to either conclusion. Hamlet, had he the opportunity, could have become a good king as a bad one. Hamlet is educated, wise, even philosophical , he is loyal and expects loyalty,
It is often spoken that Hamlet is analytical and he over thinks and he is strong for that but, there is no getting around the fact that he put off killing Claudius, as per his dead father’s wishes, for quite some time. First he put it off because he didn’t know if the ghost was truly his father or the Devil, then he put it off, even when presented with optimal opportunity, he says, “ and now i’ll do it, and so he goes to heaven, and so am I reveng’d. That would be scann’d; a villain kills my father, and for that, I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven.” He stops himself and starts to think again. He goes into a spiral of thoughts, convincing himself that he must kill Claudius at another time. There’s one thing to be analytical, a good quality for a king but, it’s another to be a procrastinator, thinking up ways to avoid the task at hand.
