A way in which law enforcement can establish that a person has the authority to grant consent is through knowledge of the right to refuse to grant consent. In an article by (TheFreeLibrary.com) it states that; “Many agencies direct their officers to advise individuals of their right to refuse, when practicable, as a matter of policy. Additionally, because the test for consent is one of voluntariness, police officers may seek to obtain consent from an individual who has been lawfully detained or arrested. …show more content…
Police officers act in full accordance with the law when they ask citizens for consent. It reinforces the rule of law for the citizen to advise the police of his or her own wishes and for the police to act in reliance on that understanding. When this exchange takes place, it dispels inferences of coercion
