Why Is It Important To Prepare Structured Interview Questions Rather Than Unstructured?
1. Why do you think it is important to prepare structured interview questions rather than unstructured? Can you give me an example of a negative outcome by using unstructured interview questions? The interview process is a very important form of communication in the workplace. After finishing the required reading for this week pertaining to the interview process and comparing the information learned to my personal experiences at work I think that it is more beneficial to prepare and formulate a structured interview process rather than an unstructured. A structured interview is well-thought-out and the interviewer will prepare and ask the same set of questions to every person that interviews for the position in question. In comparison, an unstructured interview process is not as defined and the interviewee will ask a various set of …show more content…
The questions in this particular interview process will be different for every applicant and the questions will be distinctive to the person. I think it is important to facilitate a structured interview questions for a few reasons. First, because I am an HR major I think that it is very important that all applicants are treated fairly and by asking everyone the same set of questions this is a good way to ensure equality. Second, if every applicant is asked the same set of questions it is easy to compare their answers. One example of a negative outcome from using unstructured interview questions is the interviewer losing track of time. Time is valuable, and I have personally seen on various occasions where one interview has taken so long that the interviewer then had to rush through the next several interviews because they spent too much time with one person. Subsequently, because the interviewer rushed through the interviews they may have shorten the interview process of the more qualified candidate and ended hiring the lesser

    Positivist sociologists like this as they see the structured interview as having the advantage of creating data which is high in reliability. To elaborate on this point, a Positivist would say that this is beneficial because generalisations can then be made from collections of the interviews. Pre-coded questions (with fixed response categories) also make it simpler to analyse the data, which then makes creating generalisations easier. Patterns and trends can be identified from this data, which means that cause-and-effect relationships can then also be suggested.
