Why is Jerusalem so important to Israel?
For many years, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been a complex issue that has drawn attention to the Middle East and the rest of the World. The city of Jerusalem is an important key of this conflict and it is a problem that is not resolved yet, especially because both countries claimed it as its eternal capital.
Today, this situation could change soon. Jerusalem has called attention to the world due to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Since the conflict about Jerusalem emerged again, the situation has reached a new level of intensity. Both countries have claimed Jerusalem as its capital, but the efforts have not been enough, due to their many political differences.
One of the main reasons for this conflict are that this land has a great significance for Jews and Arab Muslims. On the one hand, Jews said that they are entitled to the land known as Israel because it was where their Temple stood and it is the home of their one God. On the other hand, the Arab-Muslims said that they are entitled to the land they call Palestine because it was the destination of the Prophet Mohammed on his Night Journey, from where he ascended to heaven to speak with God.
Another main reason of this conflict is that Israel has a political movement called Zionism. According to Beauchamp (2017), Zionism is Israel's national ideology. Zionists believe Judaism is a nationality as well as a religion, and that Jews deserve their own state in their ancestral homeland, where Israel is. Some Jews often traces their nationhood back to the biblical kingdoms of David and Solomon, circa 950 …show more content…
The international communities and the Oslo accords have created many resolutions and negotiations to find peace and reconciliation between both countries, but the efforts have not been enough and a final agreement has been impossible to reach.
Apparently, this situation will change soon. After years of fighting over that land, a final solution to this conflict will probably arrive soon. According to Jeremy Diamond and Elise Labott, journalists from the CNN website, President Donald Trump on December 6th, 2017, has officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He also said that US will move the US embassy to Jerusalem because he claimed Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel and because it was the right thing to do. This statement marked a new chapter of this conflict because no countries have claimed it the capital of Israel before.
At the same time, according to Noa Landau, a journalist from the Haaretz website, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomes Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He also said that this decision will be a new beginning of Israel’s history and Israel will finally have a capital they can call a home after years of fighting for
