Per. 1 John Paul Stevens John Paul Stevens born April 20, 1920 in Chicago. He was the Youngest of four boys, his grandfather ran the Illinois life insurance company which made a lot of money. and his dad built the opulent Stevens hotel. In his teens he saw his family's good luck turn around when his dad was convicted of embezzling money to keep the hotel. Later on Stevens told the news that his dad was wrongly convicted.
“Stevens ended up graduating from the university of Chicago in 1941 where he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the World war 2 as a cryptographer”(Biography). Soon after the war, Stevens went to the northwestern university school of law, after graduating at the
top of his class he returned to Chicago where he worked as an antitrust lawyer, In 1969 he was asked to serve as general counsel on a special commission, and in 1970 President Richard Nixon appointed him to the Seventh Circuit court of appeals. After this Stevens was appointed for an even greater judicial post. President Gerald Ford nominated him for the U.S. supreme court in 1975. Stevens would support the rights of individuals in all his decisions.In the 1984 case of Hudson V. Palmer, he found that the fourth amendment did not cover a prisoner's cell.
He also supported abortion rights. Stevens would explain that it should be the choice of the women who wants an abortion and not the judge or anyone else. Stevens also was against the death penalty and in 2008 he announced that it was unconstitutional. At the age of 90 in june 2010 Stevens retired from court. A lot of colleagues wore bow ties honor Stevens on his last day of court.
