There are thousands of entrepreneurs in the world, but Kelly Hoppen is among one of the most inspirational in today’s society. Kelly Hoppen started her own business at the age of sixteen, a business where her services are now valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. In this essay I share the background, business, character, and what I learned from Kelly Hoppen about success. Background and Business History Kelly Hoppen was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and moved to London with her family two years later (Foster, 2011). Early on in Hoppen’s working life, she could not hold down a part-time job, so at age sixteen, she started her own business as an interior designer. She is determined. She always knows what she wants to do and exactly how to do it, like starting her own business. When she was 15 she had her first job, where she was asked to leave shortly after starting. The same thing happened with other small jobs afterwards, until she figured out she did not want to be in a position where she had a superior (Foster, 2011). She is controlling. Once she decided she never wanted to be someone’s employee, she started her own business. Another factor attributing to her success is her skill in design, this is the skill that paid all of her jobs. In collaboration with her design skills, she has networking skills. Her networking ability is what got her all of these jobs. She was able to make connections with friends who would hire her, and recommend her to their friends. The last trait of Hoppen that ties all of this together is her dedication. She was dedicated to making a business for herself to be in charge of her future. She is extremely dedicated to the future and spread of design. She dedicates herself to the public by mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs, and by writing books for the public on her insight to design. She tries to be connected with the public in as many ways as possible. She is on Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube. She launched an application on Apple that includes 40 tutorial videos on do it yourself home décor (Famous Entrepreneurs, 2009). In addition to that, she writes her blog on her website.
