Why Is Lab Safety Important
Safety is a priority for any lab work in this course, Material Science. It is important to handle lab equipment safely while performing the task by following all the safety instructions to avoid injury. There are several types of equipment used in this lab including Furnace, Cutting Machine, Hardness Tester, Cold Work, Belt, Disk Grinder, Grinding Strips and Polishing Wheel. By using those materials and equipment, Metallography Sample lab should be performed accordingly and use the knowledge of safety procedure throughout the process. According to the lab safety instruction, all the participant much wear safety glasses with side shield and safety shoes during the lab. The students should also remove any jewelry that can cause an accidental …show more content…
The Furnace machine which will be used in this lab to heat up material to a required temperature. Second, Cutting Machine is used to cut the material in a specific place or dimension based on the lab procedure. Third, Hardness Tester machine is used to measure the hardness of the material. Fourth, Cold Work machine is used to shape the metal without heating it, basically, it is used to shape cold metal. Fifth, Belt and Disk Grinder are used to do the rough grinding. Sixth, Grinding Strips is used to do fine grinding, and Polishing Wheel that has polishing cloth on it is used to do the …show more content…
During this process, the operator should be aware that the surface of the machine is hot. The operator should never look down the gam press because it could hit him in the eye if it releases itself. The next step is to do Find Grinding and Polishing. According to the video, the purpose of Metallography Sample Preparation is to have scratch and defect free surface. The first step is to decide where to cut the material regarding microstructure weld and heat affected zone. The next step is to encapsulate the sample in the plastic for grinding and polishing, and then mound the sample for ease of handling and minimizing edges. The sample is put into the mound and lower the ram, and then add molding compound, fasten the top of the ram and add pressure, and set appropriate heat time. In order to get a defect free sample, it is important to remove the scratches and deformation after fine grinding. The operator should do rough polishing with 3 microns polishing compound about 1 inches long, and then add a few drop of extender lubricant. After the mixture of polishing compound and lubricant is ready to use for polishing, the operator should rotate 10 times and then rotate 90° and polish another 10

In the lab, we used the following tools: lab apron, lab goggles, clay triangle, bunsen burner, ring stand, flint striker, electronic weight, crucible, crucible tongs, scoopula, gas line, beaker, copper (II) sulfate, and paper towels. To begin I took a paper towel and made a cushion on my hand to place the crucible in so that it did not touch my hand. I did this so that the oils in my skin did not absorb into the crucible. Then I proceeded to grab another paper towel and wipe the inside of the crucible to make sure there…

This machine is used in factories for preparing metal sheets. Before moving ahead, you must know what metal is? Well metal is an electropositive element having shiny surface and is good conductors of heat and electricity and can be melted or fused into any shape you want by heating it on a high temperature. Metal sheets are made by passing the material between the rollers. It is used for different purposes such as nail making, metal or steel sheets. This machine is categorized into two parts: hot rolling mill and cold rolling mill.…
