The popular article, “Why Street Protests Don’t Work,” is by Moisés Naím, a contributing editor for The Atlantic, an author of more than 10 books, and a distinguished fellow in the International Economics Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Throughout this article, Naím argues that protests are no longer productive with the popularization of street marches. By explaining how social media has undermined real activism and productive, organized protesting, Naím’s piece is subjectively denouncing social media’s affect on social movements and demonstrations. Naím’s aim is to inform the public about the importance of organized and committed movements rather than the popular movement of clicking to share without sustained action…

Mindfulness is argued to encompass two major components, namely attentional control, and a certain attitudinal adaptation towards one's experiences (Bishop, et al., 2004; Orsillo, Roemer, & Holowka, 2005). Attentional control involves objectively observing and being aware of moment-to-moment cognitive, affective and physical processes. Hence, it demands individuals to be able to focus their attention on present events and to be able to flexibly change their focus from one…

Some of the senators claim they can be used for self-defense. But the truth is that Concealed handguns are not an effective form of self-defense. A Nov. 2009 peer-reviewed study published in the American Journal of Public Health by Charles Branas, PhD, found that someone carrying a gun for self-defense was 4.5 times more likely to be shot during an assault than an assault victim without a gun. Easy weapons to control like mace and tazers would be discharched quicker both because of their simplicity and also because they are less harmful to the assailant. The victim is slower to discharge a weapon that they know will be more harmfull, giving the assailant more time to shot their victim.…

The recognition of depression as a common mental illness should lead to studies focusing on what treatment is best for a patient, but antidepressants seem to be considered the common solution. While medications are dependable, antidepressants may only suppress depressive symptoms, resulting in few longstanding improvements in a depressed patient (Annells, 55). In contrast, meditative treatments such as guided meditation, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and other activities lead to positive, long-term improvements in depressed patients (57). Although many people assume medications are the only way to treat patients with depression, the better choice of treatment may be meditation as it relieves mental limitations such as depressive…
