Why Is Mrs Wright's Covert Conflict With Her Husband In Trifles
In Susan Glaspell, “Trifles,” Mrs. Wright’s covert conflict with her husband is not outwardly explained in the gloomy play. Considering the time period the setting is placed in, 1916, family disputes are not openly acknowledged. From the scene in the play, one can only infer the husband's abuse was so intolerable to the point of murder. In my own eyes, her actions are justifiable, to save her own life from her husband’s destruction shown through the bird’s wrung neck. Mrs. Hale’s comment to Mrs. Peters, “We live close together and we live far apart,” underlines not only people’s interactions of 1916 but today's society as well.     Trifles takes place at a crime scene investigation where a group of men are searching for clues to a murder, and two women who came to get things for the woman who was in jail. As the group of guys began searching for clues to help them charge Mrs.Wright for murdering her husband, the reader begins to see the way men view women in this century by their criticism of the cleanliness of the house, and referring to kitchen things as unimportant. The irony in this is that the woman start seeing clues in the kitchen, such as all the half finished tasks and a cabinet with a broken bird cage in it. As the play continues the group notices an uncompleted quilt in the living room.
