Why is Muhammad important to Muslims?
Muslims believe that Muhammad is the Last Prophet and Allah’s Messenger as he brought the Qur’an (Muslim’s holy book) to the people. They also believe the Qur’an is made entirely of Allah’s word to them and that when he gave Muhammad the Qur’an’s word, Allah told him all the words which he committed to memory and had to scribes to write it down for him later as he could not read or write. This is why Muslims say that Muhammad could not have copied the Qur’an’s word from another holy book (such as The Bible or The Torah). When he was 25, Muhammad married Khadija, a wealthy widow who trusted him and put him in charge of her trading business.
Firstly, Muhammad is important to Muslims because he is believed to be Allah’s messenger. Although Muslims believe that there is only one God (Muslims have to recite this when they are becoming a Muslim, in Arabic it’s called La Illaha Muhammadur Rasullilah and it’s one of the five pillars - Shahadah) and Allah relies on no-one, Muhammad was Allah’s messenger and he was used as a link between the people and Allah. Muhammad was chosen to be Allah’s messenger because he was very reliable, trustworthy and determined to start this religion; he even set up the first Muslim community (Ummah).
Secondly, Muhammad is important to Muslims because he is believed to be Last Prophet, out of 147,000 prophets (such as Adem - Adam, Yaqub - Jacob, Yusuf - Joseph, Nuh - Noah, Ibrahim - Abraham, Musa - Moses, Lut - Lot, Isa - Jesus) Muhammad was the last and greatest Prophet. When he brought the words of the Qur’an to the people from Allah, he told them that he was the last prophet and that no other prophet would come after him. Muhammad is also important to Muslims because he brought the word of the Qur’an to the people; non-Muslims may argue that Allah could have used any other man to bring the Qur’an to the people and be the last Prophet but Muslims say that Muhammad was insan-e-kamil (the perfect man) and no-one could replace him, though being perfect Muhammad was still mortal and died on June 8th 632 AD.
After his death, many Muslims wondered who would be his successor, and this is how there are Shi’a and Sunni Muslims. However this is not to say that Muhammad’s successors were prophets as both Sunni and Shi’a Muslims believe that Muhammad was the last prophet. Sunni means ‘the one who follows Sunnah’ (Sunnah being what Muhammad said, did, agreed to or disagreed to) and Shi’a is an abbreviation of the phrase ‘Shiat Ali’ which means ‘followers of Ali’. When Muhammad died, Shi’a Muslims believed that the next leader should be his son-in-law, Ali bin Abu Talib (a hereditary point of view) whereas Sunni Muslims believed that the next leader should be elected from people who were capable of doing the job well (a political point of view). The Sunni Muslims side won and they make up the majority (85%) of Muslims all over the world.
Lastly, Muhammad is important to Muslims because he is the founder of Islam. Many Muslims believe that without him bringing the Qur’an words to the people from Allah, starting the first Muslim community (Ummah) and accepting the responsibility and dangers of starting this religion, there would no Muslims in this world today. Others believe that Allah would have appointed someone else to take up the mantle and start the religion, Islam.
In conclusion, Muhammad is important to Muslims because he is the Last Prophet, Allah’s only messenger and the founder of Islam.
