Why Is Ocean Acidification Bad
Have you ever thought about how ocean acidification affects organisms that live in the ocean, or even what ocean acidification is? First off, ocean acidification is a term used to describe significant changes to the chemistry of the ocean. This happens when carbon dioxide is absorbed by the ocean and reacts with seawater to produce acid. Ocean acidification affects many organisms’ homes and shelters. It also destroys many reef ecosystems. Ocean acidification is a bad thing. It’s bad because it affects not only shelled organisms, but it also affects reef ecosystems. Of course we need fossil fuels, and will never be able to stop using them completely, but we can reduce how much we use. Fossil fuels are bad, and so is ocean acidification.

Acid rain is usually a result of human air pollution such as emissions of sulfur and nitrogen compounds. These compounds react with those in the atmosphere causing acids to be produced and in turn causing precipitation to be acidic in nature. The negative impact of acid rain is evident in ecosystems. Acid rain changes the PH levels of rivers and lakes. Animals such as fish are very susceptible to changes in PH and therefore are unable to survive if the change is too drastic. Plankton and invertebrates are put even more at risk. Acid rain in water environments can also affect plant life. On land, acid rain damages forests in high altitudes and also lowers the fertility of soil as important nutrients and minerals are removed from it. These impacts on different aspects of the environment have a trickling down effect that negatively influence entire…

In The Truth about Ocean “Acidification”, by Patrick Moore, the term “ocean acidification” has been fabricated, and people do not see the positive effects it has on marine life. In 2003, many articles on ocean acidification were published. Moore challenges one of the article’s hypothesis that corals will cease to grow by mid-century, and ocean acidification will impact fisheries worldwide. Moore emphasizes that there are five key reasons why the ocean acidification narrative is a fabrication. First, the concentration of Co2 was much higher in the earth’s atmosphere during the Cambrian period. Next, most of the invertebrates with the ability to produce calcium carbonate armor are capable of rapid adaptation. Third, there are two distinct physiological…

They play big roles in the food web and in the carbon cycle. After a zooplankton dies and sink to the sea floor, their bodies still carry their shells and are turned into rock or sediment. Since zooplankton can reproduce so fast they can adapt to acidity better than bigger creatures. The only thing that we are not sure of is will acidification affect jellyfish. It’s possible that jellyfish can start to dominate the ecosystem if they can thrive in warm acidic water.…

The acidity of seawater is determined by the amount of hydrogen ions in solution , which is then measured on the pH scale. The higher the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution, the lower the pH of the solution. As stated in the previous paragraph, carbonic acid ( CO3-2) releases hydrogen ions ( H+) into the solution. If the sea water absorbs more carbon dioxide and then more carbonic acid will be formed as well. Which means the ocean will releases large quantities of hydrogen ions. Thus lowering the pH of the ocean. “ Ocean acidification: A greater threat than climate change or Overfishing,” reports that since the industrial revolution the pH of the ocean has dropped from 8.2 to 8.1. This change in the pH of water over the past 150 years is the greatest seen over the past several million years. ( Burner W. 2008…

This sea is predicted as how the oceans of the planet will look like within the next century. The acidification that might happen throughout the oceans of the world is mostly caused by the carbon dioxide emitted from smokestacks and tailpipes. (527) Thirty percent of the carbon dioxide released by man has been soaked in the oceans. Many marine organisms cannot survive in these high carbon dioxide concentrated conditions. The evidence from Castello Aragonese proves that this polluted sea is missing thirty-three percent of marine organisms that live outside the vent system. Another significant organism of the chemistry of the ocean is the coral reef. Coral reefs are essential for the ecosystem of the ocean. Ocean acidification is a threat to their existence. According to Jane Lubchenco, ocean acidification is global warming’s “equally evil twin.” (qtd. in…

As this has been happening for many years now most species have learnt to adapt to this change but if it does start to increase more some may not be able to live in those conditions anymore. The rise of this chemical reaction causes the ocean to be more acidic which is a huge issue amongst the ecosystems which lie in the oceans. The carbonate ions are a key component within the ocean, these help build structures for sea shells and coral skeletons, when the carbon dioxide increases the carbonate ions become less abundant. This means that animals are then in trouble of losing their homes or shelter from surrounding predators in the ecosystem. The structures of clams, shallow water corals, plankton, sea urchins, oysters and deep sea corals could be ruined from the increase of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Some certain species of fish may lose the ability to detect predators in the more acidic ocean, with all these changes it will affect the entire food web. Ocean acidification has a major impact on the ecosystems within the rocky shores, and the rest of the ocean but with these changes it could put a huge risk on the living species in the rocky…

Ocean acidification is caused by CO2 in the atmosphere when it reacts with water it creates carbonic acid. It's a significant and harmful consequence of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that we don't see or feel because its effects are happening underwater. When carbon dioxide is absorbed by seawater a chemical reaction occurs that reduces the seawaters pH, carbonate ion concentration, and saturation states of biologically significant calcium carbonate minerals. It decreases the pH of seawater, meaning it increases the seawater’s acidity. Over the past 250 years, ocean acidity has increased by 30 percent. At least one-quarter of the carbon dioxide CO2 released by burning coal, oil and gas doesn't stay in the air, but instead dissolves…

    Ocean Acidification Claim

This shows how she took the time to compose this article for any type of person interested in how ocean acidification would affect marine mammals. Winner explains what ocean acidification means and how sound travels through it to give the reader a strong understanding of what ocean acidification means and how it could possible harm the animals, even if the reader has no previous knowledge. She also dumbs the information down for the common person through the “pillow effect”. Once the reader has a basic understanding of ocean acidification and sound, Winner goes on to explain how the marine chemists in 2008 thought the mammals would be harmed. Soon after, Winner introduces Duda and his research experiment with the WHOI and explains how the chemists were wrong in their thoughts. Winner gave quantitative information to help strengthen the readers knowledge of the research. This information will be useful in my final paper because I wish to discuss the affects ocean acidification has on the ocean itself and its inhabitants. This article gives a fairly simple definition of ocean acidification, which I can quote in my final paper so that people without knowledge on this topic will be able to follow along. This article will also be useful in the sense that it gives information believed by many, and then falsifies it. That falsification will help show what ocean acidification truly affects and does not affect allowing me to strengthen my…

In this article, Melker clarifies the aftermath of the dropping pH’s effect on ocean life. The article states that scientists are noticing recent changes on how carbon dioxide is dramatically changing our oceans. Scientists say that ever since the start of the Industrial Revolution, the ocean has absorbed over 550 billion tons of carbon dioxide, and continues to absorb. In recent years, oyster shells have been dying off more and more. The acidity of the seawater is eating away at the oysters’ shells. As acidity increases, shell building organisms have a tougher time extracting calcium carbonate they need for their shells and skeletal systems. Because of this, shells become thinner, there is a slower growth process, and as a result, higher death rates. Although it doesn’t seem as if it would make a big difference, even small drops in pH have a huge effect on the ocean, and the organisms living in it. Acidification is also affecting coral reefs. Shellfish and coral reefs are the building blocks of ocean life. Reefs serve as important habitats for marine life. More than half of the ocean’s fish will live in a coral reef sometime in their life. Shellfish are being affected by the dropping pH as well as other organisms. Shellfish are eaten by many animals, and if they were to die off the food chain would get messed up.…

The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has risen from 320 parts per million in the early 20th century to an astonishing 380 parts per million at the beginning of the 21st century. These drastic changes to earth’s atmosphere and environment have resulted in numerous ripple effects including the acidification of the ocean. The ocean is a complex mixture of chemicals primarily consisting of water, sodium chloride and trace elements of magnesium, sulfur, potassium, calcium and bromine. Calcium is the most important constituent as it is important in sustaining marine life and plays a role in the chemical balance of the ocean. The acidification of the ocean, precipitated by global warming, is causing a change in the chemical interactions of these various ecological systems. These systems rely on chemical reactions where the pH of the ocean is within a certain range and concentrations of carbon dioxide are at acceptable levels. The increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere has allowed more of it to dissolve in the ocean causing a drastic change in pH and carbonic acid concentrations. These changes could result in the loss of various marine life and ecosystems which once lost cannot be recovered. Acidification of the ocean is a serious concern and if allowed to continue could result in irreversible and permanent changes to ocean ecosystems and marine life.…

Ocean acidification is hurting many sea creatures in the ocean. It is also hurting the world food chain. Ocean acidification is when carbon dioxide (Co2) is released into the ocean and the saltwater consumes the Co2. Many creatures have trouble living and reproducing when the ph level is low. It is hurting the world food chain because many people rely on sea creatures for food and if they are slowly dying, there won't be enough food in the world to hold all these people.…

Oceans, lakes and rivers absorb 30 to 40% of the carbon dioxide produced by the human population. Ocean acidification has been a rising issue for the last three decades, and oceanographers have been studying the carbon dioxide effects on the ocean throughout that time. It is becoming increasingly problematic because the levels of carbon dioxide being emitted into the environment are greater. In the last 200 years, the ocean has become 30% more acidic because as more carbon dioxide is dissolved into the water, the more acidic the water gets. This is destroying the marine life that has had a stable pH level of ocean water for thousands of years. The oysters have been highly affected by the ocean acidification.…

Ever since the beginning of time, Earth’s oceans have maintained a stable acidity. Oceans currently absorb a third of human carbon dioxide emissions at about twenty two million tons each day (Ocean). The carbon dioxide that has been consumed by oceans, slowly turns into carbonic acid which affects the lives of many aquatic life. Continuous emissions of these gases will raise the acidity by 0.5 pH levels by the end of the century; the increase in acidity causes aquatic shell growth come to a halt (Ocean). This rise in oceanic acidity affects lives of aquatic creatures…

Ocean Acidification is an issue in the world that is overlooked by many people because they think the ocean does not affect their lives. However, the consequences are very detrimental. For this specific problem, there are a list of many possible solutions. Climate engineering, Iron fertilization, and Carbon negative fuels, are all possible solutions to this problem. The one solution that has the best chance of working and that is an economically available are the Carbon negative fuels. This idea is the most beneficial because it extracts the carbonic acid from the ocean and replaces it with synthetic fuel using carbon dioxide. Over time, the ocean will become carbon negative, meaning that all inorganic carbon left in the ocean environment will…
