Rachel Carson was born in 1907 and grew up on a farm. She loved exploring the farm and developed a great passion for nature. Carson strived all her life for the world to become a better environment to live in. At 57 years old she died from breast cancer. In 1966, the Rachel Carson Natural Wildlife Refuge was established. It was established to protect salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds. It totals over 5,300 acres and consists of eleven divisions. Each dispersed along 50 miles of coastline between Kittery and Cape Elizabeth. Rachel Carson made very many people realize how important it is to conserve nature. In 2009, “Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society” (RCC) was founded. It is a non-profit institution. It is based in Munich, Germany, but staff there comes from all around the world.
The people who go there want to advance discussion and research concerning the interrelationships between nature and humans.
