The Utah handbook gives us around eight safety tips to use for railroad crossing. All of these tips are very helpful, but for me, I feel as if most of these should be common sense. If you think clearly, then all of these tips will come easy for you. Also, if you're goofing off, then these are most likely where these tips apply. Some things I didn’t know that I learned about is that “When you stop at a crossing, you must be between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail.” Also, “Do not park closer than 50 feet from a railroad crossing unless signs indicate that you may or it is allowed by local law.” The tips given by the Utah handbook are to expect a train on any track at any time, don’t get trapped on railroad crossing, get out of your vehicle if it stalls, watch out for second trains, never drive around gates, never race a train, watch for vehicles that must stop at railroad crossings and don’t misjudge the speed and distance of the train.
