1. Rainsford is uncompassionate, this is seen when he’s talking to Whitney. “‘Don’t talk rot, Whitney.’ Said Rainsford. ‘You’re a big game hunter not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels’ ”.This shows how he’s uncompassionate because he takes no account for how the animals feel. It’s all about the sport. He is also a very proud person. One way the author foreshadows that something is going to happen was the name of the island. The name ‘Ship-Trap Island’ implies that the ship might crash or that they might become stranded on the island. The superstition that surrounds the island also foreshadows that something bad may happen. The next clue is revealed when Zaroff reveals his love for hunting. His passion for hunting shows us that he can use a weapon and not only that but he is very skilled with one too. The mention of there being big game on the island also builds on this suspense, as he has to import the game onto island. The suspense is then built on when the General mentions that hunting has become too easy, it no longer fascinated him, and no animal had a chance with him anymore. If no animal had a chance with him anymore then what is possibly hunting on the island? The answer to that is later on revealed that he had invented a new animal. This adds on the suspense leaving the readers questioning what animal could he have possibly invented and how could he invent a new animal. The final clue is revealed when General Zaroff mentions that the perfect prey should be able to reason, but no animal can reason. Except for one,
