Objection: Standardized tests can be good for teachers and students in some ways.
Standardized tests are difficult for teachers and students.
Standardized tests do not evaluate the student’s growth over the year. The tests evaluate how well the student is at that time of the year. Students may not do well on one test, but do well in school. Many people don’t do well on tests. Standardized testing is remembering things you were taught. Some students cannot memorize a lot of information and use the information to take a test.
Students are spending too much time studying and preparing for the tests. Students have to review topics that they should already know. Other subjects, like Science and Social Studies, have lessons with Math and Language Arts to help prepare for PSSA’s. Students with learning disabilities and ELL (English Language Learners) have a hard time taking these tests. Some students have to miss their special classes in order to prepare for these tests. Students stress because they know that they cannot have any help. There will be questions that they don’t know answers to. They stress because the tests are long and hard. Teachers have to prepare students for the tests by reviewing subjects the students have already learned and also teaching new topics. Some teachers may quit because they get so stressed out. Parents stress because their child(ren) stresses. They also stress because they want their child to do well.
