Why Is Summer Reading Important?

As high school students, many of us need to do whatever we can to prepare for our future. Reading is an amazing way to help us. Summer reading should be required because it builds students knowledge on a topic and because it keeps their mind’s focused over the break. We will gain many advantages just by picking up a book. It is known that reading makes you smarter. Reading a book over the summer can advance your knowledge on a topic. Teachers assign reading and assignments to prepare you for your future education and careers. If we assume that every student is doing the required reading, we can “think of all students as college bound, then we can think about high school education generally as college preparatory” (Bushrow, DeWeese, and Fanetti 77).
