The puritans (and immigrants later on) originally wanted to be able to worship who they wanted. They just wanted to escape the hardships and punishments they would have suffered. In many countries if the people didn’t worship the God(s) their government or leader wished they would be punished. These people came to America to be able to worship whoever they wished. Openly and privately. That was the original American dream.

They have almost changed the dream into revenge. The “American Dream” today doesn’t exist in the same way it use to. People today aren’t dreaming and working for their dream like they once did. They now expect it, they think it should just be given to them, because they are American. They know longer want the possibility of these great dreams, and the ability to work towards and accomplish them. Today, the people expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. They say they demand equal this… or equal that… . In reality they want everyone to be on top. Which isn’t possible. Can you have a cheerleading pyramid with everyone being on the top? Can you build a building with only a roof?
