While stationed in Montgomery, Alabama, Fitzgerald met a lovely, 18 year old Southern Belle by the name of Zelda Sayre (Willett). It was love at first site, only for Fitzgerald. Zelda was a very greedy woman. She almost did not marry Fitzgerald due to the fact that his novel, The Romantic Egoist, was not accepted by Charles Scribner's Sons for publication; consequently, this left Fitzgerald with a meager bank account (Willett). Zelda did not like the idea of being married to someone who wasn't rich. She broke off their engagement in 1919 because his paltry salary was not enough to satisfy Zelda (Willett). Soon after the break up, Fitzgerald rewrote the novel and titled it The Side of Paradise. Scribner's reviewed Fitzgerald's novel one more time and decided it was worthy of publication, so they published it. Suddenly Fitzgerald became a very wealthy man, and young, greedy Zelda came back to him a week later and they got married (Willett).
Soon after Fitzgerald and Zelda married, they had their one and only child, Frances Scott Fitzgerald.
