Why Kids Should Not Have Homework
Homework. The one thing that ruins every student’s day. The one thing that takes up all of your time. While some experts say that homework is beneficial to students, some argue, however, that homework doesn’t help students whatsoever. I believe that kids should not have homework because it does not help students academically, some kids find it hard to do homework, and it has bad effects on students. One reason why kids should not have homework is because it does not help kids academically. For example, according to the article, “ As Homework Grows, So Do Arguments Against It” it states, “High school students studying until dawn probably wasting their time because there is no academic benefit after 2 hours a night; for middle-schoolers, 11/2 …show more content…
The first example of this is that in the article, “As Homework Grows, So Do Arguments Against It” it states, “...when it pinned homework and child labor as leading killers of children who contracted tuberculosis and heart disease.” (This occurred in the 1930s.) This shows that lots of kids died in the 1930s just because of homework. This could have been for many reasons but most likely because of stress and pressure. In the article, “Should Schools Be Done With Homework?” it says, “ In April, Denise Pope, a researcher at Stanford University, found that too much homework can negatively affect kids by increasing stress and sleep deprivation and generally leaving less time for family, friends, and activities.” What this is saying is that because of homework kids can become stressed and this could lead to them not doing their best with their homework, tests and quizzes, and other work at school which is not good for their learning or health. The final example of how homework has bad effects on students is from the article, “Teachers Call For Ban On Homework” It says, “The motion also says many children appear “unhappy and anxious”.” If students are constantly being unhappy and anxious because of homework then that could cause them to lose interest or become discouraged and cause them to not do it. That was the final reason why kids should not have

To begin with, homework is taking way family time and fun time from students. Because students get a lot of homework they no longer have time to spend time with their family or have their own free time. For instance, in the article titled “5 Reasons Why Homework is Bad for Your Child,” the author states, “Children need time to spend with their family, catch up with friends and attend extracurricular activities so they can refresh their minds and bodies.” The reasons that are stated in the article specifically, are examples of how homework takes away family time. School is supposed to only take up to 6 hours but with homework it no longer take 6 hours of school work but more. Therefore, students don’t have enough time to do there own things.…

The clock hits 7:30 and I just get home and haven’t been home all day. Then I realize that I have to do English homework, social studies, science and math. This has happened to me many times. The second reason we shouldn’t have homework is it is a major health issue for most kids. First off, you get less sleep because some teens have to stay up all night because they get home late and still have to do a lot of homework. Students in middle school need a lot of sleep because they have to wake up at 6:00. People say that kids from ages 10-18 need at least 8-9 hours of sleep and some teens only get 6-7 because there up so late doing homework. The second reason homework is a health issue is it gives kids a lot of stress because they have to do homework and don’t want to forget anything. This gives students more stress because they already have stress from tests, lessons and exams. The last reason why homework is a health issue is kids…

Homework has been around for as long as there have been tax paying schools. The first person to create homework was Robert Nevilis from Italy in 1905 (Roberto). Over the years that homework has been around, people have gotten different impressions and opinions on the topic. Most students believe it is way too much and unnecessary. Teachers believe that homework is very useful and beneficial for the students. While other faculty members believe it is a waste of time. Teachers and students are not the only ones with mixed emotions on this topic (NEA). Parents can also relate. Imagine a world where students come home from school and take the time to unwind and relax. It has been proven that almost three quarters of Canadian parents think that homework is a household stress. So why is homework still being assigned at schools, especially for younger grades? In recent years, the question of whether or not homework should be banned from elementary schools and limited to one hour per weekday in high school has been widely discussed. According to a Stanford Researcher, too much homework can negatively children. It takes their lives away from school, where family, friends, and social activities matter (Parker). The opponents of this educational approach argue that if students are not given homework to do, they will not become successful in the future. However, banning homework from elementary school and limiting it to one hour per weekday in high school is beneficial in terms of health, academics, and real world experiences.…

In 2013, research that was conducted at Stanford University found that students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical or mental health problems such as ulcers, migraines, sleep deprivation, depression and weight loss, a lack of balance in their lives such as not enough sleep, food, or hydration and they become isolated from society. (citation) It’s like homework makes you suffer from not being able to do what you want to do because in your mind tells you that you have to get it done before anything else. First, homework isn't helping kids as they rarely have time to get outside and be active. Without time to get outside and exercise, more and more kids are being diagnosed with ADHD and obesity. They don’t get to have fun and let out energy so when they are at school for seven hours a day they have a harder time concentrating. This has become a growing problem with middle and high school students as many schools have taken out physical education from the school schedule. When kids get home, they won’t have time for exercise if they have hours of homework waiting for them.…

Now at days, students are given an unbounded supply of after school work.. Alice, a sixteen year old student from Washington D.C. says that she often has about 4 hours of homework each night(Jesella). Added to the approximately 7 hours of school, she spends 12 hours a day working. In comparison, the average adult works approximately 8 hours a day. How are we students supposed to enjoy our youth if we spend more time working than our parents? Also, agonizing amounts of homework can take a gigantic toll on a student’s health. The weight of a high schooler's bookbag can fuel their back pains for years. Furthermore, the mental stress can leave a student sleepless and grouchy. (No wonder why most of us teenagers are so cranky most of the time!) The stress of homework can even be the reason of why students start cheating. According to a 2005 study of 1800 students conducted by Donald McCabe of Rutgers University, more than 60 percent of students admitted to have committed some sort of plagiarism(McAdams). The mental stress caused by an overly unnecessary amount of…

Another problem homework can cause is pressure. What parent doesn’t want to see their kid succeed? Yeah, getting into a good college is important, but pressure to perform well doesn’t solve anything. While this may not sound like a serious problem, it really is- there have been cases of suicide due to the pressure that homework brings. An article in the GuangDong News reported that a 10 year old from Foshan, China tried to poison himself. Luckily his parents found him in time and rushed him to a hospital. He said afterwards that the pressure of having to do so much homework everyday was just too unbearable. Although it’s not as drastic as death, another problem is that many pressured kids resort to cheating. People seem to forget that the purpose of homework is to learn, not just to get it done.…
