As a personal example my friend who went to SDSU, smoked weed like nobody’s business, but she got through college and now is doing an internship at the white house. She is constantly posting up photos with the secretaries and she smoked weed almost every day. So when the arguments of impaired short term memory loss or slow reaction time, sometimes can be false. My friend has proved that wrong and told me if it wasn’t for marijuana she wouldn’t be doing what she’s doing now. Yes maybe one in a million of this ever happening again, but she battled and fought the “so called” effects of marijuana. Now there may be more kids out there like that, they are called “functional high people”, which means even after a hit or a bowl or two, it only makes them active instead of sitting down on their couch as the commercials described. Besides my friend beating the odds, most results are shown that teenagers are influenced by marijuana and somehow become addicted. When everyone knows you can’t become addicted to marijuana because of two things, one it only takes a little to get high, and two it’s a gateway drug that leads to something that can kill you. The only way an individual can be ever be addicted is by medical usage only, which you’re prescribed an amount for a daily use. “Scientists have confirmed that the cannabis plant contains active ingredients with therapeutic potential for…
The drug Marijuana has been widely used for many years. This illegal drug has caused much controversy over being legalized. It is the third most popular abused substance worldwide. Heavy users of this drug often argue that alcohol, which is legal and more dangerous than Cannabis. People see marijuana as a gateway drug. Teens who often start with marijuana often times become users of a more addictive and dangerous drug. The use of marijuana causes many health issues such as lung cancer, loss of brain cells, impaired motor ability, blood vessel blockage and many other problems. “Children ages 12-17 are 85 times more likely to use cocaine Marijuana has also been linked with teen violence, suicide, crime and unsafe sex-HIV transmission” (http://marijuanatoday.com/cons.php).…
What many people do not understand about marijuana is that it is a safe drug and not all drugs are bad drugs. “Marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning. Similarly, more than 400,000 deaths each year are attributed to tobacco smoking. By comparison, marijuana is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose.” (NORML, 2015). Marijuana comes in third behind alcohol and tobacco as the most popular recreational drugs. There has never been a death due to marijuana due to the fact that is is nearly impossible to overdose and it is “nontoxic”. It is very confusing to many people as to why this drug is illegal when looking at how safe it is compared to things like alcohol and tobacco…
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, marijuana is a Schedule 1 substance, which means that it has no medicinal purpose and has a high risk for abuse. Although marijuana is not federally legalized or approved by the FDA, 20 states (including Hawaii and Washington D.C.) have already legalized medical marijuana, and two of those states (Colorado and Washington) have already legalized marijuana for adult recreational purposes. When marijuana is ingested or smoked, THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) a chemical naturally found in marijuana, targets neural receptors in the brain giving users a “high.” Altered perceptions and mood, impaired coordination, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and disrupted learning and memory are some of the effects that marijuana users may feel. Long term effects of heavy marijuana use include: respiratory problems (daily cough and phlegm production, frequent acute chest illness, and increased risk of lung infections), increased heart rate by 10-100 percent, and mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts among adolescents, and personality disturbances, including a lack of motivation to engage in typically rewarding activities. Studies have also shown marijuana to be psychologically addictive.…
Statement 1: It is pretty obvious that smoking marijuana causes people to crave more potent drugs, such as cocaine or heroin. Statistics show that almost all people who become addicted to drugs smoked marijuana before they began using more potent drugs.…
Drugs have become one of the most controversial topics in the world. Some specific drugs are more frowned upon such as Marijuana. Marijuana is a plant in which its official name is “Cannabis”. Over the years this plant has become increasingly popular to people who don’t usually convert to traditional methods to relieve the stress of a hard day. “The National Drug Threat Assessment states that over 25.8 million individuals 12 years of age and older have smoked marijuana at least once in their life.” The rate has remained the same since 2008. The government labels these statistics as too high as they fight to keep one of the most contentious substances off the market. In 1970, Congress passed The Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act .…

What is marijuana? marijuana, as most know it, is derived from the plant cannabis indica. The leaves and flowering buds of the female cannabis plant are harvested and dried. The product of this process is called, among many other titles, marijuana. Cannabis is a schedule 1 drug, considered illegal in the United States. The reason for this? Smoking marijuana gets you high. The sensation of a high is hard to describe. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, mimics the neurotransmitter anadamide, producing a slightly euphoric, stimulated, thought provoking high. Recently, marijuana has been a strong topic of debate, support for its legalization has been growing steadily. It has already been decriminalized in 18 states, and is now legalized in 2. It seems marijuana is on the fast track to social and legal acceptance, and for good reason. marijuana should be federally recognized as legal because of its relatively insignificant ill side effects, adversely positive medical value, and public support. Alcohol is one of, if not the most, popular drug in America, and its not exactly safe. Alcohol is linked to upwards of 75,000 deaths per year. To put that into perspective, thats twice as many deaths per year caused by firearms (suicide and homicide alike). This toll is accepted for a simple reason, we love alcohol. Bars and liquor stores line our city streets.. On weekend evenings, getting drunk with your buddies is a social norm. As a nation, our government attempted to end this statistic via prohibition. Making alcohol illegal didn’t stop Americans from drinking, crime…

Marijuana is safer than many legal drugs and was outlawed on the basis of false, unscientific claims. The incredible advantages associated with its legalisation (in terms of taxation, regulation and weakening the black market) cannot be overlooked by false ideas and a system of prohibition that does not…
The situation of the legalizing marijuana is a very popular topic, I think it needs to be legalized. I myself with complete honesty, do not smoke or have any use of marijuana. In my opinion the legalization of marijuana can benefit the United States. The idea of legalizing marijuana in the country might be exceptional for others, but it’s more towards the economy. The legalization of marijuana can have excellent changes, but also can contain minor flaws.…
The brain of the average human is not done developing until the age of 25 or 26 therefore teen smokers risk directly affecting the process of their developing brain (URMC). According to NIDA for Teens (NIDAT) chronic use of the drug can lead to damage in the hippocampus, a key component of the brain as well as an 8 point drop in IQ in recent studies. By damaging the hippocampus one may affect the ability to learn and can also damage memory as these are two of the main functions of the hippocampus. Analyzing the effects of THC which alters information received in the hippocampus can also explain the difficulty to create memories while high. With steady use these difficulties in memory can become long lasting and also bring along troubles in judgement as well as cognitive impairment. The American Psychological Association (APA) states that short term effects of marijuana on the brain include impaired functions such as attention, memory, learning and decision-making. With the brain under construction during teen years any cessation to development can crucially impact the final outcome as being high can be considered a cessation of brain development. Since the brain is developing the short term affects can last longer in an adolescent’s brain slowing reaction time even days after being high. Furthermore according to Health Line (HL) there may be a link between depression and anxiety to the use of Marijuana. Previous generations argue that their brains were not dramatically affected while growing up on Marijuana however according to the Trusted Teen Treatment (TTT) versions of Marijuana today contain more THC than those available in the 1970’s, containing up to 10% THC. With this said the effects of the higher THC can only be hoped to be prevented as the result are in the…
Marijuana has been illegal since 1937. The Marijuana Tax Act, enforced because people believe men of color would solicit sex from white women while under the influence of marijuana. According to multiple tests and the statistics more people have died from cigarettes and alcohol. Marijuana should be legal due to the shear fact that it is safer than alcohol and cigarettes. Marijuana to this day, after 79 years, in some places is still illegal and believed to be more dangerous than cigarettes. This myth is 100% false. About 6 million people die every year from smoking cigarettes including second hand smoke. Statistics show that by 2030 the annual death rate will be 8 million. compare this to virtually nobody dying from a direct cause of Marijuana smoking the numbers are gradually in favor of Marijuana being safer. In fact it takes a consumption of 15 pounds of Marijuana in 15 minutes to “overdose”, which still may not even be fatal. In the film Super High Me,…
