My view for my future is to become a great force in the world with a purpose for bettering the world as a whole for those who currently live in it and for those who have yet to come.
UNC provides me with the foundation and environment to properly hone that purpose and give it necessary definition. UNC’s broadness in fields of study along with its world renown education attracts me to this school. Its multiple fields of study will allow me to explore my strengths, interests, and weaknesses while remaining strong in fundamental education. Why the Morehead-Cain scholarship? Because it focuses on individual AND community growth. It builds independence AND stress the importance of networks/community. It is everything I need it to be and it will push me to make it more.
The summer programs in and of themselves are incredible tools and opportunities. Purposes of testing limits, gathering experience, understanding individual impacts, promoting personal interests, and giving scholars a chance to have hands on knowledge of corporations would give me the chance to grow in ways that I can’t even conceive at the moment! It has an entire summer program on service, which has been a huge corner stone to my highschool experience. Gaining experience in the corporate world before graduate school will be incredibly useful and eye opening! In addition, the Discovery Fund allows scholars to grow in leadership, networking, and self-discovery. It’s abilities to open doors originally thought locked will be invaluable. I have learned to mask this terror by smiling, making eye contact, breathing, and building self-confidence. Slowly this fear has diminished, but not completely, I still shake before every performance and each step toward a mic has a small price of agony, but once I reach it once I give a single person a smile I can push forward, because it would be much worse to run away before many than to simply sing or speak. I am also brave in that I can express my opinions and can take hits against them. I can learn. I am afraid to be wrong, but if I am I can admit it and develop from it.
