Depression, stress, and harmful past experiences are all reasons why someone might seek for refuge. People need refuge to get their minds off of experiences that may haunt them. When someone has stress, refuge can help. Despite all the negative events that may occur, it is key for people to seek for refuge in locations, close bonds, and hobbies. can use friendship to talk out feelings and problems. With hobbies it will get someone active and keep them distracted. It is important to go outside for comfort in life. A new place can open someone's mind and help them forget their problems. In the article “On The Run From Everything But Each Other” by Christopher Goffard, Adam and Ashley find refuge in going outside. Speechless Adam states ‘“The first time I ever got on a train -- It is unexplainable, it is a feeling of, like, where I belong.”’ (Goffard). Adam lets the audience know how he felt when he first got on a train. He explains that he felt as if he had belonged there, as if he belonged on the train, he also lets the audience know that he was speechless because of how great it felt being on the train. Adam finds great emotions and feels as if he belongs on the train, somewhere he has never been. The author, Jon Krakauer of the book, “Into The Wild” introduces Chris McCandless as a guy who finds refuge in the outdoors. McCandless acknowledges that ‘“The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun”’ (Krakauer). McCandless tells how he finds joy in watching different horizons each day being able to see a new and different sun while he is outdoors.
Based on what McCandless states some people may also find joy and refuge like he does while being outdoors watching the horizon. Just like some people are able to find comfort in certain locations, everyone else can.
It is important being part of a sport to find refuge. Running, and hiking can help release stress and make someone feel better about themselves . McCandless explains “I wanted to climb the mountain so badly, it seemed beyond the realm of possibility, the climb becomes a clear-eyed dream, hours slide by like minutes” (Krakauer). He shows that climbing the mountain was something he wanted to do for a long time since it seemed impossible, he explains that as he was climbing it seemed less near impossible and that time went by really fast. McCandless found refuge by hiking the mountain which he thought was impossible and that made him feel good about himself, since time was going by fast he also felt less stress. In the article “Running For His Life”, by Michael Hall, Gilbert seeks comfort in his life while he runs, the reasoning behind him running is to run away from his past which he got beaten and burned alive. Not only does he find comfort but he also loves to run and does it as a profession. Hall explains that “Sprinting around the track, speeding up
hills, sprinting up and down on a bench-all to improve, he’s fanatics, obsessed with every half-second, every curve of the trail, every ache and pain” (Hall). Sprinting can really get people’s minds off things, It can get someone focused on improving their speed and trying to beat their goals. Running is a stress reliever and it may also help someone feel better about themselves since they are being active and not just sitting around. Some people are able to find refuge in sports such as running and hiking than so can everyone else. It is just a matter of trying something new. It is important to have a close relationship with someone to have comfort in life. Close friendships, someone to talk to can help get things off someone's mind and can help someone find refuge in something or simply just by having a person to talk to when needed. Adam and Ashley have each other “Adam and Ashley, were inseparable, telling her he wouldn't lose her the way he'd lost so many other friends” (Hall). Adam and Ashley have a really strong bond, they are inseparable and Adam does not want to lose her like he has lost other friends in the past, showing that he finds refuge in their friendship and that he really needs her. In the article, “Violinist has the World on Two Strings”, by Steve Lopez, Nathaniel is a man who finds refuge in playing music. “ Nathaniel often talks about his mother, expressing his love in his own way” (Lopez). Nathaniel finds refuge in mother, he enjoys about her and he really likes to express his love towards her in his very own way. ‘“ she was a beautician, that’s beauty, music is beauty, I guess that’s why I started to playing”’ states Nathaniel (Nathaniel). The way Nathaniel likes to express his love towards his mother is by playing music, he believes his mother is beautiful, music is beauty, that’s why he decided to start playing music. Just like these people found refuge in having a close relationship with someone else by either talking or simply having them in their life so can anybody else. Locations, friendships, and hobbies are all possibilities that people may find refuge in. A good thing to do now would be to start seeking refuge in some of these areas. Examples are presented, so it should now be slightly easy to find refuge. Refuge is found in something that people may enjoy being part of.
