Stereotypes tend to make us forget to consider a person’s individuality and can cause us to judge a person prematurely. The things that we think based on stereotypes could very well be completely untrue. I also believe that because of the…

In Brent Staples "Just Walk on By: A Black Man Ponders His Power to Alter Public Space," he expresses the difficulties African Americans face in society. His essay is driven by emotion and resentment. He speaks on the role prejudice plays in his life and the world around him. Staples explains how throughout his life, others have discriminated against him because he is a tall, black man who works as a journalist in a predominantly white field. Clearly, anger fuels Staples’ writing, yet he maintained a calmness throughout the essay and did not point fingers. As he explains, he first realized how much his appearance frightened others, particularly a white woman, when he used to take late night walks as a graduate student. Staples conveys where he was negatively stereotyped as “a mugger, a rapist, or worse” (Staples, 422). It is clear that public space is able to be altered through racial stereotypes. It not only influenced lives of people like Staples, but infringed onto the “victims” of Staples and others like him. His lifelong exposure to this matter taught him to take precaution in the people he encounters and the places he visits.…

Woman in Aeschylus’s Agamemnon are perceived as untrustworthy and ignorant characters. The role of women in ancient Greek life, was considered to be insignificant compared to that of Greek men. And yet, in tragedies, women were often written as major characters, revealing insights on how women were treated and thought of in society. Many well-known Greek plays contain several well-written, complex, female characters. Each female character takes upon herself, the role of villain, the role of victim, and the role of heroine. Drama and theatre in the ancient Greek world expresses the communities’ concerns in regards to their ambitions, fears, hope and their deepest sympathy. In Greek drama, playwrights often included pivotal female roles, despite the fact that the cast was strictly male. The role of women in ancient Greek life is deemed irrelevant compared to that of Greek men, however, in tragedies, women are often written as major characters, revealing important insights on the perceptions and treatment of women in society. For a woman to possess qualities such as leadership and strength is not typical, in fact it is seen as masculine and un-ladylike. Many Greek plays contain several complex female characters; Aeschylus is a playwright whom incorporates a very complex female character, Clytemnestra in his play Agamemnon. Although Clytemnestra is one of the most recognizable and noted female villains due to her involvement in the murder of her husband and his concubine, one can argue that her actions are justifiable. Whether her vengeful actions are triggered by the death of her daughter Iphigenia, her love for Aegisthus or the jealousy of her husband’s mistress Cassandra, either is motive enough to make her turn to evil. There is a quote made by the chorus that suggest evidence that women are incompetent and over emotional for leadership,…

They can be correct and be incorrect as while. Majority of the time its use in a negative and harmful way. We can all be held responsible of stereotyping at one point or another. Stereotypes affect people’s social lives, emotions, and how people interact with their environment. In America, we have a great problem of stereotypes. Stereotypes are widely oversimplified image of a particular type of person. It is basically a false image of a certain type of person. Stereotypes can be racist, are mostly not true, and are offencive to many people. Stereotypes are common in today’s pop culture, Television, social media, and practically everywhere else. Since they are almost everywhere in today’s world, they can be learned, and spread easily. Some kids today learn stereotypes, and often believe them, therefore giving the a biased opinion most of their life. The effect of stereotypes is that the group of people being stereotyped.…
Stereotypes are everywhere, including school. In a poll taken by 20 DHS students, 55.5% of the students answered that most stereotypes are about certain groups of people such as athletes, cheerleaders, etc. One example would be “Athletes don’t care about grades” or “Popular girls are always mean.” However in reality, maybe athletes do care about their grades, but just don’t have enough time to do all their homework. Maybe popular girls are actually nice, but seem mean due to rumors other people have made up. We don’t ever think about what happens “behind the scenes” owing to the fact that society has already given us an image of what happens. Even Samara Green, the author of “Fairy Tales and Gender Stereotypes”, said “Maybe it’s because of the books and movies we grow up learning from and the characters we idolize.” There are numerous movies out there that show the dumb jock and mean girl stereotype such as “Mean Girls” and “Clueless.”…

Most stereotypes are negative and may cause much harm but there are positive stereotypes, which also have a negative impact because they influence prejudice. One positive thing that can be gained from stereotypes is self-motivation. “Still other researchers have conceptualized the benefits of stereotype use in more motivational terms, such as self-enhancement.” (Lambart, 1997, abstract, Para. 2) Negative comments can sometimes be used to reinforce our self-esteem and prove everyone wrong. From experience, I can say the statement is true, I am the oldest of three girls, and my father always had high aspirations for us, yet low expectations. Never truly believing in our capacity to complete higher education and maintain a decent job, he always said, “Hispanics are lazy and like the easy way out, we prefer money rather than obtaining a degree.” Rather than bringing me down, I set a goal to prove his beliefs are wrong, and I will be one Hispanic who succeeds.…
Mehmet Murat Ildan, a contemporary playwright, novelist and thinker, once said that “When you do something different, you are either blessed or cursed!” This is a true statement, yet it is also false. It is true that doing something different can cause you to be only blessed or cursed; however, it is also more often than not that you can be both blessed and cursed which is the case for many individuals and races nationwide.…
