Why Performance Enhancing Drugs Ruin Sports
From the eyes of many sports fans there is no straight answer to the question “do drugs ruin sports”; Some fans might say yes because it morally wrong, other fans say no because faster stronger players are more fun to watch. In professional sports the best players are paid the best and there is a lot of competition out there to be the best; some people believe hard work and dedication is the way to get to the top while others believe there are shortcuts to get there. Most professional sport organization have some form of anti-drug policy and conduct test on it’s athletes to ensure they abide by the rules, when players fail to comply with league policies they are faced with consequences for their actions. There are many leagues and organizations that don’t formally have a anti-drug policy so the athletes can get away with using performance enhancers which makes a unfair playing field for those who don’t. The main goal for most athletes is to get to the highest level of their sport and to get there you need to start practicing you skills early and have dedication. Some athletes use performance-enhancing drugs like steroids to help them get to that level. It’s becoming a problem to the point that people in high school are starting to use drugs; since there is no drug testing for high school athletics, they get away with using these drugs without fear of the consequences. The students that do take advantage of not dealing with drug testing are going to have an edge over their peers who are more concerned with their future health and are trying to make it with hard work and dedication. To some people the future risks aren’t as important as making it to the show so they see no problem in putting thing into their bodies. Some people get sucked into doing drugs like steroids because it is what everyone else is doing. Using high school students as an example, if players know at teammate is taking steroids and notice he or she is starting to excel and is getting

As children, many people are introduced to the famous quote by late National Football League coach, Vince Lombardi, which is "winning isn 't everything; it 's the only thing" (Voy 204). Sports have always been about winning; however, some professional and amateur athletes take this simple saying too literally and it changes their outlook on their profession. As high school and even middle school athletes, they start to take drugs in order to be accepted, or to better their performance on the playing field (Louria n.pag). Once theses athletes reach the college level; they experiment, and are surrounded by even more drugs in order to get any advantage. It is not fair that one athlete can work hard in order to improve his performance, but then have another athlete improve more than him due to being wired on cocaine or bulked up on steroids. Also, Robert Voy states that drug use today is the biggest threat to the Olympics ideal, thus the Olympics and many other professional organizations are turning to drug testing. Testing is a huge controversy today because many believe that it violates one 's right of privacy; however, if there is no testing, many athletes will continue to have an unfair advantage to non drug users (180). Furthermore, it injures the user because it will result in mood changes, and it will hurt their health, if not immediately, then it will later on in their life. The chance of being caught using drugs is so small compared to the achievements one will have while using drugs which is so vast. No athlete should have an unfair advantage, these advantages only promote drug use, which many athletes believe it is a necessary means in today 's time. The only way to have the use of drugs decrease is to have mandatory drug testing across the board for all athletes.…

A sport that is considered free of performance-enhancing drugs tends to have a good reputation, especially when compared to sports such as cycling and swimming where the use of performance-enhancing drugs is considered rife. By permitting the use of performance-enhancing drugs, the public perception of these drugs, especially surrounding youth, could be flipped, with people believing that it is ‘okay’ and ‘normal’ to use drugs that are very bad for a persons health. Recent statistics from the Health Research Funding organisation show that, among American teenagers who use steroids, 60% were encouraged into practice because of a professional that was taking these drugs. All of these teenagers went on to say that it was the right of a professional athlete to be able to use these drugs, no matter the cost to their…

Many people do not see the severity of drug use in professional and High School athletics. Athletes feel that because they are "stars" there should be no repercussions for their illegal activity. The use of steroids and other performance enhancement drugs also effects athletes at the high school level. We’ve all had someone we look up to in our life, whether it be our parents, family, or athletes in this case. With today's culture many kids have sports teams or sports athletes that they look up too or favor. If one of them for example has a Major League Baseball(MLB) player that they look up to and they notice them using steroids(after the hypothetical legalization of course) , then that child may very well end up trying to acquire these drugs just so that they can use them just like their role model. The influence these athletes have on children is huge and if they were all to set bad examples what's to stop the kids from trying to follow in their footsteps. Another problem that arises is that many people nowadays like to use short cuts. If they realize that they're allowed to use this drug to become better athletes then why wouldn't they, and it doesn't stop there, many teenagers might think of using this as a casual drug to help them look more athletic. We must not just think of how it will effect the professional leagues but even outside of the sports realm as…
