Why Physical Education Is Important
Reflection Paper in Swimming (My Prelim and Midterm Experiences)

Physical education is an important aspect in our curriculum as a student. It is a daily well programmed and appropriately monitored physical activity that can help us to increase our self-esteem, develop knowledge, attitude, discipline, and confidence needed to maintain active lifestyles and acquire the skills needed to develop a positive attitude towards physical activity that will last a lifetime.

I’m the type of person that rather chooses to stay on the pool sides instead of swimming and enjoying the water because I, myself, know that I’m not good at it and doesn’t know about it even a little. So, as I got to know that we will have a swimming class for this whole semester, the first thing that came up to my mind was how I can surpass and accomplished it without failing.

I had so many experiences during prelim and midterm. We started with all the basics particularly bubbling and breathing. At first, it was just fine and a little bit easy for me to perform the so called “Prone float” but as time went by, I started to suffer the difficulty especially in Free Style. It was hard for me because I don’t know what are the proper movement of the head and arms and I can’t swim that long because I don’t know how to breathe in the water so every time I turn my head to breathe, instead of getting air, I always end up drinking water.

I really had a hard time in learning the free style that came up to the point that I was so tempted not to attend the class because I was afraid to be embarrassed knowing all my classmates know how to perform it well except me. But fighting with the temptation was worth it because as time went by, I learned it even though they called my free style “slow motion”.

The most difficult stroke I suffered was the Back stroke because I don’t know how to do even the Back float. While practicing it, my body always tend to get drown that made me drink a lot of water. Drinking

Dr. Boggs sets all the equipment up so that we are ready to try the first activity which was wake surfing. The main activity my teammates wanted to do was wake surfing. None of them, including myself, had ever wake-surfed before, but it was one opportunity we could not miss out on. Cole, jumping out of his chair, could not wait to go first. He hopped out of the boat and swam towards the surf board. We all watched as Cole was about to be the first person on our team who would wake surf. “Now Cole there are a couple of steps that you have to do in order to get your board up and surf. First, you must lean back as far as you can with your left foot on the blue line and your right foot on the red line of the board. Next, when the boat starts to move, you have to press down on your right foot while tightly holding the rope with you left hand in front and right hand in the back. Finally, you will jerk forward and began to start surfing, but you have to stay low and on balance.”-Dr. Boggs. Cole was now ready to wake surf. He did all the steps Dr. Boggs had explained to him and he managed to fall face flat into the water. My teammates laughed as he tried to swim back to the board, but all that made me want to do was try it out for myself. Cole fell multiple times and was unable to stay on the board for more than ten…

My main strengths in swimming is front crawl, I am good at this stroke as I use the correct muscles and joints effectively allowing me to generate lots of power, which enables me to glide through the water easily. I use my deltoid and trapezius which are located at the top of my back to muscularly pull my body through the water. To start the front crawl I must dive into the water using my hamstrings and quadriceps, I must use these muscles in a short burst to generate lots of power. I also have long arms which means that I have a long arm stroke, this allows me to have less arm strokes per length, and this means that I have more energy in the last fifty metres of a sprint.…

I get halfway to the other end of the pool. I start to feel my lower half start to droop in the water. I say happy words like “I can do it” or “almost there!” The words pump me up for only a short bit of time. But then the words get drowned out. I get to the wall and do my last flip turn. I push off the wall and start my strokes…

Swimmers also require a fierce determination. A strong will, so when the going gets tough, the tough get going. You have to make a conscious effort to work on your stroke form, your turns, your touches. Every swimmer knows that the last stroke can make or break a race. You may think you tied the swimmer next to you, but in reality they touched a sixteenth of a second before you. In swimming, every second counts. My coach hammered into me that it wasn’t you against the swimmers in the other lanes, it was you against the clock, you against yourself. After about a year or so of swimming, I started ignoring everyone in the other lanes. From the second I heard the bell, to the moment I touched the wall, it was me against myself. It was me, pushing myself as hard, and as fast and far as I could go. To me, if when I finished the race, I could pull myself up out of the pool right after I finished, I didn’t race hard enough. But those times when I would race a 200 yard sprint, by the last 50 yards, I felt like I was pulling lead. But I would just think,…

Victoria knows how to swim without assistance of a floatation device. She is not afraid to swim in the deep end of the pool. She can jump in the deep end, feet first, and submerge her face underwater. Victoria has very high energy, and is capable of moving through the water for long periods of time. Even though Victoria is capable of travelling all over the pool, her movements are very violent. On arm strokes, Victoria often hits the water with the palms of her hands. Her feet are far apart on her kicks and her toes are not pointed. The “Sports Skills Assessment - Level 1 Swimming Test” shows Victoria is capable of completing tasks such as: water adjustments,…

The entire first week, I was stuck with the coach to work on my diving. He kept repeating that I should dive with my head instead of my whole body. While my body and my mind told me, "Quit! Quit!" in my heart, I felt that quitting was not the right response. I wanted to become as good a swimmer as my teammates.…

Competitive diving is a sport that often begins with failure but can lead to success. A new dive is challenging because of the fear of the unknown, the preparation time, and the confidence it requires. You do not know how to perform the dive; therefore, you do not know how to respond if something goes wrong. In diving, fear is as controllable as managing an energetic three year old; extremely difficult.…

One of the main workouts that we did was that we would start submerged in the pool and we would have to jump on top of the top stair. At the beginning, it takes several attempts to jump on to the top stair because it requires a colossal amount of strength and focus to jump on it. Another thing that we worked on was learning how to control our breathing. Usually, we would do “tuck jumps” for two minutes and then we would immerse in the water. The goal was to stay under the water for as long as you possibly could.…

Swimmers go to swim team and practice daily so we can keep our speed up. It is important because you don’t want to fall behind in your group. Older swimmers can have a harder time than younger swimmers picking up the speed if they went on a break. We practice for 2 hours a day at least, sometimes morning and afternoon practice. When we are in school we practice in a twenty-five meter pool, but in the summer we practice in a fifty meter pool. When we go to swim team we like to practice as solid as we can, even though our coaches make it hard. Practicing sprint work and the strokes that we are not excellent at. When we practice the strokes we perfect them so that…

    Breast Stroke

    • 937 Words

The breaststroke is a swimming style in which the swimmer is on his or her chest and the torso does not rotate. It is the most popular recreational style due to its stability and the ability to keep the head out of the water a large portion of the time. In most swimming classes, beginners learn either the breaststroke or the front crawl first. Since the breaststroke can be swum with the eyes almost always above water, it is important in lifesaving, as it allows the rescuer to approach the victim without losing sight of them. However, in competitive swimming, the breaststroke is regarded as one of the most difficult strokes, requiring comparable endurance and leg strength to other strokes. Some people refer to breaststroke as the "frog" stroke, for your body moves like a frog swimming in the water. The stroke itself is the slowest of any competitive strokes and thought to be the oldest of all swimming strokes.…
