Why Planarians Are Good Organisms
A planarian is free-living flatworm that lives in fresh water. Planarians are organisms that live in freshwater. Planarians are part of the metazoan phylum. Animals in the metazoan like jellyfish have the ability to regenerate (Raymond 511-512). Planarians are closely related to animals like jellyfish and starfish. These animals shared the same special ability to regenerate; starfish are able to regenerate their arm when it is cut off. Jellyfish are able to regenerate their stinger when cut off (Li et al.,). Planarians have the ability to regenerate. Planarians are able to regenerate because they have cells called neoblasts that are able to respond to the injury and repair them by regenerate them at the spot of the injury. They produce cells at the spot of the injury (Galbraith & Newmark 37). …show more content…
If they were cut in half then they would regenerate a whole new tail in the matter of days or if someone cuts of their head then they will make a whole new head. There are no restrictions on cutting a planarian because their whole body can regenerate. That is why planarians are good animals are good organisms to study, according to Galbraith & Newmark, they said, “The capacity of planarians to regenerate all missing body parts after wounding makes them exceptional model in which to study robust,” (Galbraith & Newmark 42). Planarians can be cut in any directions and it is cool organism to study. Kinesis is the planarian is moving to the response of their environment and no is going towards something directly.     Planarian worms are free-living flatworms that are not parasitic. Planarians have a three-cavity digestive system. Planarians are usually either carnivorous or scavengers. Planarians may eat other living, as well as dead, invertebrates, detritus or decaying organic matter. Planarians do not realize that are eating a lot, and can over eat resulting in death. Most planarians are freshwater forms that can be found underneath dead leaves, rocks or logs. Planarians belong to the order Tricladida. Most species range from about 1/8 inch to 1 inch. There are different species which come in white, gray, black, brown and sometimes transparent. Planarians are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both female and male organs. They reproduce sexually but they cannot reproduce by fertilizing their own eggs with their sperm. Planarians can also reproduce asexually by regeneration.
