Why School Should Start Later
School is the last place a teenager wants to be at. No one likes to wake up at the crack of dawn every morning sit in a desk for seven hours, and learn the facts of life. School is probably the only word that can make any kid cringe at, but recent researchers have learned that having a later school start time can improve major problems students are having. Including, stress, sleep deprivation, mood swings, harmful behavior, and academic skills. In a report it says, ¨ Delaying school start times by one hour improves standardized test scores by at least two percentile, one in math and the other in reading.¨(“ Do Schools begin too early”).

Research shows that kids who get more sleep on school nights automatically improve in all their classes. Even though, it may not seem like kids can improve in just one night, sleep can heal anything, kids that do not get enough sleep during the school year have a good chance of having, depression, attention-deficit, hyperactivity-disorder,

Many benefits would come from moving the start time to a later time. One issue with schools’ early start time is that students become sleep deprived. A teenages normal circadian sleep rhythm is they won’t fall asleep before 11 PM and they some have to be up by 5:00 or 6:00 AM to get ready and to be at school on time (npr). This is causing students to not get the healthy 8-10 hours of sleep that they need.…

Certainly it could be said that if school starts later, then it will end later; while this is a good point, it fails to account for the loss of sleep caused by early start times. The Scholastic Scope article explains “For one thing starting school late means dismissing school later, which leaves fewer daylight hours for after school activities like sports” (O’Neil 21). Although this is true, many students arrive at school later because they do not get enough sleep. While some might argue that starting school later means that districts will have to invest in busses and drivers, they forget that starting school later will help align school schedules with sleep schedules. For instance, the article explains “School bus schedules are arranged to meet the needs of not just one school but all schools in the district” (O’Neil 21). Even though there would need to be more buses to meet the needs for all schools, kids would be more alert in class. Some people may argue that starting school later brings the wrong message to kids. The Scholastic Scope article says “Being on time, managing a busy schedule, and getting enough sleep are important skills teens will need to know when they enter the workforce” (O’Neil 21). In contrast, starting school later would help kids stay physically and mentally healthy. Starting school later will help students academically succeed and stay mentally…

if jimmy has good grades it makes him look good and the school will look good. so there for i do believe that a later day start would great for everyone. Also i think it would benefit the teachers because then they would have more time to get stuff done and maybe it'd actually allow them to teach better which would also allow the students to learn better and again earn better grades on class work, homework, and test. but however by doing that and getting out a hour later or possibly more then that it will also give teens and kids less time outside during the day when the sun is up to get something's done and pretty much students and teachers would be living in the dark because you'd always be in school during the day. but still for better grades and more…

Most of the time when students start earlier they are just exhausted, and on top of that, teachers cram their brains with information and pile them with homework. On average, students in school should range from about eight to eleven hours of sleep a night. By starting school later, it would help the students’ brain to recover from the required amount of sleep to stay healthy and energized up for a new day. Students who start later and end at the same time as usual would still be rested up and still have the energy to be able to do any out of school activities that would be great for a resume or just for personal hobbies.…

One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

Schools that have adjusted their schedule to start later than the standard 8:03 a.m schedule have students with better performance, so it would optimal to adjust the start time to 8:30 a.m minimum. By further allowing more time in the morning, both teachers and students can be more satisfied since they can have breakfast or do whatever they wish to do. It is debateful that starting school later means it ends later in the evening, however with the current schedule it causes more harm overall - thus compromise is necessary for better results instead of personal…
