Why Should Backpacks Be Allowed In Schools
Imagine being a teenager again in today’s schools, basically running through the halls with arms full of books, so there might be enough time to get into assigned lockers, hoping that nothing drops off the pill of books that is being carrying. According to Northeast Middle/High School Handbook, it is restricted for students to having any form of carrying bag during the school day with the exceptions for P.E. class and laptop case (provided by school). Although the Northeast Student Handbook prohibits backpacks on students during school time, students should be allowed to carry them because there is too much to carry, not enough time, and it provides safety for all school equipment from being dropped.
One giant class book; about 3 pounds, one computer and case; about 6 pounds with charger, one bulky binder; about 2 pounds, one pencil case; easy .5 pound, and extras needed for individual classes can weigh up to 20 pounds. The constant strain caused by the weight of class materials have led to students slouching who will later in life have back pain if they don’t have it already. According to Tara Parker, from The New York Times paper, she tells, “They found that kids in the 2nd and 4th

To understand how a student feels about backpacks being allowed on students during the class day, they need to be asked. According to Erica Delarm, student of Northeast High School, thinks student should be allowed, “I agree that students should be allowed to carry backpacks because I think it would help students get to class on time.” (Delarm) She agrees with other students that they should be allowed backpacks. If students are allowed to have a backpacks they will not have to worry about dropping things in a hurry, have time to use the restroom and ask teachers for a little help, and all the school equipment is protected from falling under hundreds of stampeding

Just watching students in the halls at the beginning of the year will tell you that backpacks are exhaustingly heavy. As Stephanie Kraus’ article “Big Backpacks Equal Big Problems” shows, there is real proof that this is damaging to our bodies. When we carry the excessively heavy bags, it puts pressure on the spine. The spine is important in supporting our bodies, and putting that weight on it can ruin posture, interfere with normal growth patterns, and even cause long term back problems. Over the years backpacks have been getting increasingly heavy, as we struggle to cram the entire contents of our locker into our bags before dismissal. Experts are saying that your bag should be “between 10-20% of your own weight.”…

December 1965, a group of students met at Christopher Eckhardt's home and discussed that they wanted to show support for the truce in the vietnam war. They decided they would wear armbands to school to support it, but the principles of the Des Moines school found out about their plan. A new rule in school was passed. That all students wearing any armband would be asked to remove it, and if they refused, they would be suspended. On the 16th of December, Mary Beth Tinker and Christopher Eckhardt both wore armbands to school, were asked to remove the armbands, and when they refused, they were send home. The next day, John Tinker had the same situation and and resulted the same way. In response to the suspension, the students sued the school district…

There have been 74 school shootings in the United States since the Sandy Hook shooting. This number is extremely high and causes heartbreak to our country; students deserve to attend school with no fear. Security guards and rules are not enough. Targeted bookbag and locker searches should be allowed because it would lower the amount of deaths and injuries in schools, lowers the amount of drug use in schools, brings a positive look to schools, and communities. Believing that these searches or maybe even metal detectors will help with the danger in schools today. According to Kate R. Ehlenberger, “Officials conduct random or blanket searches not because of individualized suspicion, but as a preventive measure. Examples of random searches include the use of metal detectors in school entrances and…

I believe that high schools should have open lunches. Students should be able to leave the school grounds and go to a fast food restaurant, or, if they choose should at least be able to go outside and eat. Students need to have a small break from school during the day, even if they are outside, they still can take their minds off of school work for a while. Students need to have fresh air and adequate sunlight. Fresh air and sunlight is a proven fact to help students in their studies and it also helps the students concentrate more. I understand that the school staff would not like the fact that the students would be able to leave campus without supervision. Are not the students in high school? Should we not have the responsibility to be able…

If my school considered making a change to the dress code the item I would choose is hats. Hats don’t distract people and they are very fun to wear. Most of the times people want to wear a hat we have to pay for that rule which is dumb. Another reason is because both sides want hair accessories like hat and bandanna.…

Firstly, the students see the searches of their lockers is an invasion of property given by the school itself "The biggest drawback to a school locker search is the lack of trust students may feel as a result of actions they see as an invasion of privacy. Because students may keep personal items in their lockers, such as photographs and personal letters, even a search with the best intentions can appear to be a major breach of trust by teachers and administrators, causing a rift between the student body and the faculty" (classroom-synonym) the evidence states that the searches would be negative in many ways. First being a violation of the 4th amendment, and second, searches decrease the trust between teacher and students in an environment where the teachers require the students to trust them. In addition, the students feel that it is a violation of their privacy. Students question why they are being targeted. Some schools say that the lockers are their property, however backpacks are the students’ private property, but schools state that whatever comes to school, the teachers are obliged to search if reasonable (classroom-synonym). In the case of New Jersey v T.L.O, although the bag was owned by…

Guns on a school campus is an issue with two clear sides, those who support allowing concealed weapons and those who rally for gun free zones. David Burnett supports the idea of allowing students to carry concealed weapons. Burnett’s central argument is that gun free zones leave students defenseless. Darby Dickerson disagrees, saying students do not understand the responsibilities of owning a weapon and should therefore, not be allowed to carry them on campus.…

The argument against backpacks is now justified because students can keep back packs with them and nobody will get hurt. Teachers can set up a designated area for backpacks to got to prevent tripping or any injuries during the school day. Students backpacks will no longer lay about and cause a potential threat to students and teachers safety. We can place them in certain areas of the classroom so that we to continuously ensure the safety of faculty and students. Also back packs pose no greater danger with weapons and or drugs then students everyday purses, gym bags, or even laptop bags. Those items can be just as dangerous as any book bag out there. A bag is a bag, so if you're allowing gym bags, purses or anything of the sort consider that the threat may still remain without backpacks. Last of all having backpacking during emergencies would speed up any the safety procedure since your backpack would be right there with you at all times during the day. If there would ever be a need to leave the school you would have all of your essentials with you so you can grab what you need and exit the building. If you have everything with you evacuating would be much faster, compared to if a student had something precious in his or her locker that they had to…

The lockers have been given to the students expecting them to take care of it and being responsible over it. What is the need to go through it? I have been given a locker since sixth grade and never once has a teacher much less a principle gone through my locker. If they were to go through my locker it would make me feel like i'm a suspect for something I have no connection with.On our way into school each day student’s book bags are checked each day. There have even been instances in which the security guards have taken over an hour to go through the student's belongings, while teachers, administrators and principals go through without being checked not only is it hypocritical but unjust. Teenagers should be given the benefit of the doubt. I have been present in an event where a teacher unjustifiably read his messages out loud after his phone rang in class without him even having it in his hands. It wasn't in the teacher’s responsibility nor authority to go through his messages much less reveal his messages. We are called the next generation yet we are restricted to are given liberty's by others insecurities. If people can't practice what they preach then they should change their speech. I would rather be considered a rebellious teenager than a lying hypocrite.Trust has become nothing but a blur and a silver lining with perseption, perseption is all that they can see in the end of the…

Recent data shows that an estimated 30.6 million US students eat school lunches, yet only 6% of school lunch programs meet the nutritional requirements made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (“Three Facts About”). Although the lunch criteria has changed by requiring more fruits, vegetables, and whole grain choices, there are still countless steps to be taken to make school lunches more nutritious. In public schools, there are many unhealthy choices given to children for lunch, and there should be a change to offer healthier foods.…
