The students need a little shove to practice and remember, because without knowing what was taught, they cannot improve the next year. For example, kindergarteners learn simple addition and subtraction. Over the summer, parents are encouraged to practice with their children the math skills learned so the kids can remember them for the higher level addition and subtraction in first grade. The same idea is used in the higher grades, including high school. Summer assignments are assigned for the use of the students to practice for the next years. Every skill taught the year before is used for the rest of the educational career being pursued. Even today, I have to use simple addition in Algebra two even though I was taught that about eleven years ago. Remembering what you have learned is the whole point to learning in the first place. What is the point of going to college to become a dentist if the next year after you graduate every skill and lesson is forgotten? If that were the case, everyone would have terrible teeth, doctors would not know what to do, and teachers would not be able to teach well because they would not remember what they are supposed to teach and how to teach it. Maintaining the information taught is the reason for going to school, so assignments to ensure the absorption of the
