Why The Uglies And One Of Us Is Lying

Trust. You have to trust your family, friends, others you meet in your lifetime. The Uglies and One of Us is Lying are both books that center around trust. Both books teach you about trust in different ways, in Uglies it teaches you that trusting what others say isn’t always the truth on the other hand, in One of Us is Lying it teaches you that trusting people comes with consequences. In the book “Uglies” it teaches you that trusting what others say isn’t always the truth. This is shown in the text, Tally is talking to David about finding Dr. Cables tablet and finding her notes on how they use the brain lesions to play with a pretties brain. “ All her notes on making pretties and Specials. Not just the physical part” - he pulled her closer-

It’s everything my parents weren’t told when they were doctors.”(Westerfeld 386), This piece of evidence is showing that when David’s parents became doctors they believed that they were told everything about the operation and what will happen inside the uglies body. But then they told all they knew to Tally to help find a cure and “fix” pretties brains. Tally also trusted that she was told the truth about everything but she should have been careful about what she believed. Another piece of evidence to show trust is found in the text, when Shay is telling Tally about this David guy that is ugly and if they run away with him then they won’t have to get the operation every. “Okay, Shay, David’s real. But so is being ugly. You can’t change it just by wishing, or telling yourself that you’re pretty. That’s why they invented the operation”)Westerfeld 79) This piece of evidence is showing trust because Shay wants Tally to trust that David is real and that they can help them stay ugly forever. On the other hand in One of Us is Lying it teaches you that trusting people comes with consequences. In the book “One of Us is Lying” it talks about trust and it is trying to teach you that trusting people comes with consequences.
In the text, it talks about how Bronwyn is talking to her new “friend” Nate and they are relieving their secrets to each other, “Yes, I sold drugs while on probation for selling drugs. No, I didn’t dump peanut oil in Simon Kelleher’s cup. You?”(Mcmanus 121) This piece of evidence is showing trust because Nate had to have really trust Bronwyn to tell her about selling drugs and she had to really trust Nate to tell him about cheating on her test. Another piece of evidence that shows trust is in the text, it has to do with Addy talking to Simon Kelleher’s friend, Janae, Janae helped Simon with his secret plan, “One time when we were meeting with Siom, jake recorded us on this phone. I was trying to talk sense into Simon, but the way Jake edited things made it sound like it was practically my idea” it continues to talk about Janae and how she was supposed to plan evidence on Addy in her house the day Janae came over but she couldn’t and plants it at Nate’s house so Addy says “Why?” My voice is tiny, my hands are shaking badly that Simon’s manifesto making a rattling sound. “Why didn’t you stick to the plan?”(Mcmanus 327)This is showing that Addy is trusting that Janaea is telling the truth about Jake being involved with Simon Kelleher’s death and she is believing Janae a person she ain't really friends with. While some may argue that this piece of
evidence could also show honesty because this is showing that Janae is being honest with Addy on Jake being involved in Simon Kelleher’s Death, some may forget that in text it’s showing that Janae is trusting Addy that she could tell her about Jake being involved in Simon Kelleher’s death and his plan to frame Addy.
Both books teach you about trust in different ways but they are both similar in many ways. In both books, they teach you about trust in different ways but they are both similar in many ways.
They are similar because they about teach the readers about trust. In the Uglies, it says in the text, it’s talking about Tally meeting Shay and trusting her as a good friend. “That is cool. I mean, I don’t think I could stand to lose another friend. You know? We don’t have to worry about one of us abandoning the others. Not for a single day.”(Westerfeld 37) This Piece of evidence is showing that Tally thinks that Shay is a good friend to trust and that she would come back if one of them don’t.This also shows that Tally thinks that Shay will stick with her every when they turn pretty which may never happen. In “One of Us is Lying”, in the text, it’s talking about how Addy is trusting that Bronwyn will respond to her and that they have a good friendship. “ I text Brownie in frustration, not expecting an answer since she’s probably in the middle of Chopin or something. I’m surprised when she messages me back right away, and even more surprised at what she writes. Be careful. I don’t trust her.”(Mcmanus 246) This piece of evidence shows that Browny and addy trust each other and that they can have a good friendship. This also shows that Addy thinks that they can be friends if they trust each
other. Trust is important to have with others, like your family, friends, and classmates. Ask yourself do you trust everyone 100% and do you also trust what they tell you 100%. If you say yes then you need to rethink your choice because that is what happens in both books, Uglies and One of Us is Lying and the characters do find out the truth and are very surprised on what it is. So next time you meet someone new ask your self will you trust them and will you trust what they say and tell you?
