Great Pyramid of Giza Pharaoh Khufu, whom the Greeks called Cheops, ruled Egypt during the Fourth Dynasty, which was in the first half of the Old Kingdom period. Khufu commanded his workers to make the biggest pyramid ever on the west bank of the Nile River. This pyramid, a structure made for the tombs of pharaohs and queens, was made out of 5 million blocks of limestone. There were three burial chambers inside one of which was built into the bedrock underground. The queen’s chamber was higher and the king’s chamber was the highest. This writing style allowed the ancient Egyptians to pass cultural messages and information from one generation to the next. It also allowed the society to become more united. The Ancient Egyptians often wrote hieroglyphs on tablets or walls, but they also wrote on a known paper called papyrus. Papyrus paper was made from a tall reed like plant. Sometimes scribes used a faster short form of hieroglyphics on papyrus called hieratic. Hieratic script, also known as ancient Egyptian cursive writing, was used from the 1st dynasty until about 200 bc.
