Their misery was also because of the extreme corruption, poverty and discrimination within Guatemala. There was terror and panic within society and people wanted to be protected and obtain justice, which was almost impossible due to the corruption within the Guatemalan government and the justice system. The people of Guatemala got angry and decided to find justice on their own. This led to the establishment of the organization Madres Angustiadas, which recruited women from the middle-upper class and women that were willing to prioritize the organization over anything else. Madres Angustiadas believed that Guatemala lacked patriotism, thus people should unite despite of their different race, ethnicity, and nationality. Furthermore, the people of Guatemala yearned for change and progress, which was possible when Juan Arevalo was the first democratically elected president in 1945. Arevalo was against Liberal individualism and Marxist socialism, and wanted to initiate political democracy, which would guarantee basic freedom like freedom of speech to the people of Guatemala. Throughout Arevalo’s presidency, he established a social welfare program, which focused on construction on schools, hospitals, and housing. The extreme corruption among the Guatemalan justice system and government, caused them to not take any legal action against crimes. This is significant because criminals were not being prospected, and found more ways to commit crimes against indigenous Mayan people. Eventually this led to the indigenous Mayan people to find justice on their own by committing crimes to stop other from commiting crimes.. Villagers were murdering or torturing criminals in broad daylight to guarantee “safety” in society (Gilbert 9).Because of the lack of social progress, indigenous people began to migrate to the United States for a stable and invulnerable life.
