They threatened Ali with 5 years in jail and a ten thousand dollar fine, which was the normal penalty for avoiding the draft at the time. Although he was a successful celebrity this would affect more than is finances, it would also affect the way the people of the United States would look upon their great boxer. Religion played such a major part in his life that it allowed to him to have completely separate views from the rest of the general American population, whether you can agree or not in more of a personal opinion. He was so devoted toward his beliefs that he was willing to risk his career and reputation to stand up to what he thought was right. Though the government did not agree with his reason for not going into the draft, it ended everything that he worked for in his boxing career but also, he gained respect and popularity from many people that might not have ever watched a boxing match in their
