Why We Should Be Mandatory Military
Mandatory Military Essay While many people feel that mandatory military service protects the United States, ultimately in reality it sacrifices numerous of our fellow young citizens to death. Therefore, we should not have mandatory military service even as a proposition. Till this day there is a huge debate about whether or not people of a certain age should be forced to go to war. People question, should young men and women attend the military service? Is it really worth it? Supporters of the military service say that it is a course through which young men and women would be able to learn a wide range of skills physically, morally, and even mentally. Every soldier fighting on the front lines for the United States is there because he or she volunteered and made a huge sacrifice for their very own country. However, If people were forced to join the military, then the troops might not be as reliable because some soldiers might be unmotivated to fight causing them to lose their life (Draft lottery 1969). Although the military is an excellent place for young people to learn about real discipline, some of them will not have respect for the service the military has provided. And nobody would want any soldiers fighting in combat who did not really want to be there in the first place. If people are forced to do a task they have not chosen, their participation or performance will create difficulties in the battlefield …show more content…
However, others who are against military service should be able to fulfill his or her duty by taking on specific tasks that does not involve having to go to war. Some people could be on-call forest rangers in which if a forest fire broke out, they could help fight it. Others might be better at rebuilding neighborhoods or building homes for homeless people and low-income families. Other options could include working on emergency crews in times of natural disaster or even end up teaching in rural schools. The young generation could also be patriotic to their country just by doing humanitarian work and joining the Peace Corps.     In 1967 when I enlisted in the Marine Corp we did not have the draft, the Marine Corp never used the draft but the Army did. Around, the spring of 1967 the Corp decided it needed the draft to fill all the slots open. So they started to drafting, we then had a lot of men starting to call their congressman about the way they were treated and wanted them to change the Corp. The quality of the Marine Corp started to fall so after a few years of the draft they dropped the draft, then the quality came back I feel that if you want to be in the military then you should enlist. With the job market the way it is today we should have a large group of people waiting to join. I see in the news that people want their men and women back and protesting they don’t want them to go to war, who does. But we take an oath to protect and honor the constitution of the United States of America. When called we will protect our nation no matter what. So why are these people crying about their family members going overseas let’s look at it like this, it’s a job you get paid to do a service for the country. It is an honor to do this, be proud to serve and protect we learn, and we grow when in the military many men and women have become adults fast, even if they didn’t want to they have to. Does this make them a better person I think so, if some turn out bad or misguided they would have been misguided anyway. So is it time to reinstate the draft I say no. Maybe the politicians should, be drafted and serve their country instead of trying to place people where they do not want to be. Give the military men and women more pay and respect them for what they do. When we came home from Vietnam we were spit on and called names, these men and women deserve more, honor them do not humiliate them.     I do not agree with the reinstitution of a military draft. In 1973 the military draft was lifted in the United States and with good reason. The United States should not rely on a draft to fill military vacancies but rely on recruitment. It is true that the military offers incentives and luxuries that some civilians could not afford otherwise such as food, shelter, and medical care. However, they are just that, incentives.
