Why We Should Have School Uniforms

Ever wondered the philosophy behind wearing school uniforms? Do you think all schools in the United States should have school uniforms, why or why not? In schools where students are obligated to wear school uniforms everyone generally looks the same every day, there is a slightly different style between boys and girls, but both are wearing the same colors. There is a belief that there should be no school uniforms; people don’t benefit from looking like everyone else every day. Most people are expressing themselves by what they enjoy wearing. America is still a free country, and people can and should be able to wear what they want where they want.

Do we want everyone looking the same and not showing any originality? Procon.org states, “At a time when schools are encouraging an appreciation of diversity, enforcing standardized dress sends a contradictory message.” All students would be
wearing the same colors and style day after day. You would absolutely not be able to tell identical twins apart if they were dressed the same. People would not be giving complements about some one’s article of clothing, which is always an additional means of happiness for children.

People are fond of manifesting themselves by what they wear, so if all students are in a uniform nobody will see the style which is unique to them. The First Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees that all individuals have the right to express themselves freely. Also, if someone likes sports or has a certain band that they continuously listen to, then their friends would have an idea of what that person takes delight in. You would get to know their distinctive style and therefore know more about their apparent personality. We live in a free country so we should be able to wear what we want, where we want, whenever we want, so long as it is not breaking the law. Furthermore, wearing uniforms could have a long term effect on our freedom; it could be perceived that the schools can tell us what to do outside of their customary range of authority. Schools should not force students to wear something they dislike.

Some people might just say the opposite that schools should have uniforms.
A bulletin published by the National Association of Secondary School Principals stated that "When all students are wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; thus, they can concentrate on their schoolwork." School uniforms would not work out as well as not having them, people would all look the same, and no one would be happy except for the few who enjoy not having creativity. Whereas, the people who don’t like school uniforms, which would probably be more people than those who like school uniforms, will be happier and more content without them. It is true that if you have school uniforms then no one can bully you about the articles of clothing you wear and so people will not feel devastated inside. If you are forced to wear uniforms then you will probably not have a very happy life in school, and if people aren’t happy in school then they probably will not do as well in their studies. It is easier to excel at school when you are
happier.

It is important to a student’s success in school that they are happy, as you can see wearing a uniform is not the best choice for helping children to be happy. Three excellent reasons for no school uniforms are; everyone would look the same; people like to express themselves by what they wear; we live in a free country so people should be able to wear what they want, when they want, and where ever they want. Furthermore, people enjoy waking up and having choices to start their day and most will stay committed to being against mandatory school uniforms.
