Why we Should Insulate the Basement
“Winter is coming.” As we approach the imminent arrival of winter in our world, these words from Game of Thrones should definitely be kept in mind (Martin 1). For many of the people of Westeros have fallen to the cold, and we in our realm are no more immune to this hazard. Keeping oneself in a thermally stable and comfortable environment is important to the health, welfare, happiness, and productivity of an individual. Unfortunately, people do not always recognize the importance of that. For instance, the basement in my home is almost always too hot or too cold and has been that way for a long time. This is a problem, but there are some potential solutions. This could be fixed by either finishing the basement, covering the windows, …show more content…
Depending on the season, we will need to use either our air conditioning or central heater more often (Citation Needed energy bills?). This can cause us to consume significant amounts of money, especially when in the winter, we activate what has been our standard temporary solution for the past several years, the electricity glutton known as the space heater. It alone costs us about $1.32 per day of use (Casey 2). If we assume that the heater is used for 8 hours per day and that we use it from the beginning of November to the beginning of March, that means we spend about $40 per month and $160 dollars per year on just this one heater. If we took that money and invested it in insulation instead of burning it, we would have a more comfortable place to stay in and after a few years, we will have made back the money we spent on
