As a person who has been babysitting for about six years, I can attest to the fact that the children who played violent video games were more aggressive than the children who were interested in art or sports. Violent video games teach children that violence is acceptable and fun at the same time, have been proven to lead to aggressive behaviors in children, and also desensitize children. A majority of the video games on the market today contain some form of violence in them, and about 73% of them actually reward the play for the violence. ("National Youth Violence", 2008) This means that the ultimate goal of the game is to perform an act of violence, whether it be killing a person or destroying a building. Not only is this teaching children that violence is acceptable, but it is also showing them that destruction and devastation can be fun and rewarding. Dr. Cheryl K. Olson, co-director of the Center for Mental Health and the Media, states that "it's not the violence per se that's the problem, it's the context and goals of the violence." (Harding, 2008) She is basically saying that violence in video games is acceptable if it is played as a side factor, but it causes problems when it is the main focus of the game. This may not seem like a big deal since the children are not killing people in real-life, but research has shown that these video games are having internal effects on the children who are playing them and are causing developmental
