Learning new skills and knowledge is something that is required every day in my job. Currently, I am not eligible for promotions because I don’t have the necessary college degree. Also, when I try to compete with others for jobs that don’t require a college degree, the other applicants have some type of formal education on their résumés that outweighs my background. I want this college degree so I can compete with others for the jobs for which I am qualified. Today’s employment market is filled with talented people who have various degrees, speak multiple languages, and have varying experience levels. Without a degree, it will become more difficult as I get older to find a position I not only enjoy but that also provides for my family.…
It is a big step for someone who has been out of school for so long, to have the courage to begin the journey of higher education. Personally, it took me several years of contemplating if going back to school was the right move for me. I postponed it until I realized this was the only way I could provide my family with the life I’ve always dreamed of. I’ve came to realize that even though this will be a very challenging 4 years of my life, I will persevere as long as I keep my eyes on the price and stay motivated. There are many components to ensure success in my educational and career endeavors; such as, personal responsibility, use of the resources provided by the University, and have self-awareness. I’m sure to succeed as long as I apply myself and take advantage of the resources that are designed to assist in my academic life, subsequently into my professional life.…
Hello everyone! My name is Nicole. I have tried to further my education several times in the course of about 11 years. I started with dual enrollment classes during high school, and I even tried an online school, but throughout my life I became easily distracted and fell into several traps. I am a fast learner that had issues like waiting until the last minute to complete assignments and paying for it later, but school is something that I enjoy, after I complete a class I feel like I’m one step closer to becoming successful.…
I have been thinking about returning to school for many years but marriage, kids and work were my first priority. I decided that now is the right time, with my last child in college and the economy in a slump. When I graduated from high school, all that was needed to get a decent paying job was a bachelor’s degree. Today, a bachelor’s degree is the equivalent of a high school diploma 10 years ago.…
I would like to transfer once I get my associate degree at a community college because I feel I am ready to move forward with my education. I currently am enrolled at Cabrillo Community College, which is, for the most part, a transfer prep college. Community College has prepared me to study at a University and I hope to continue my studies as far as I can go. As I grew up, I was interested in a wide range of subjects and never found one thing I was truly passionate about. When I started at community college, I was set on a computer science major because I knew I was computer proficient and enjoyed spending my free time figuring out programs. I struggled a great deal in the major. As I realized that I was not passionate about programming, I…

After careful thought and consideration, I made the desire to return to school into a realistic goal. I had finally come to the conclusion, that it was time to take control of my circumstances, rather than continue to let my circumstances control me. For the first time in twenty years, I have a window of opportunity to fit a degree program into my daily schedule. Returning to school had always been a desire of mine, but in the past, I did not think I had the time or the money to pursue a degree. I was a single mother, I was working all of the time, my children were very young, and half of my wages went to daycare expenses.…
Many people in today’s economy are finding it very difficult to survive financially and are frantically seeking ways to overcome that threat of losing everything they have worked so hard their entire lives to achieve. Since the job opportunities are few and far between many are turning to furthering their education, but some of us from the older generation have found it can be very frightening and challenging to return to the classroom.…
Why I made the choice to return to college and complete my degree in Business System Administration is unique. I have thought about this for years and it’s a personal goal I want to accomplish. I have a great job in the military teaching new soldiers which is something I love and enjoy. I am ten years away from retiring and looking forward to life after the military. Why would a person that is in the middle of their career want to return to school? The answer to this question is that it’s a personal goal I’ve had for years to obtain a college degree. I have started and stopped several times due to my deployments and family commitments. I have tried on different occasions to start back but the military makes it almost impossible to plan ahead and commit to anything long term.…

I have taken a break for many years on attending college level classes due to many reasons. Many times I did not sign up for classes due to personal and professional obligations, however, other times it was for my pure laziness. As the years have gone by, I have come to realize that I need to motivate myself and finish something that I set out to do about 17 years ago. During this day and age jobs have become highly competitive and usually require more than experience alone. I feel like I have remotivated myself and feel extremely eager to learn and continue my path of learning as I will soon transition from the military life to civilian life. I have always had an interest in technology and found it natural that I would try to pursue a degree within that area.…
Once I left high school in 1992, I attended the Sawyer School for Business. With class to finish, I found out that I was pregnant and having problems. Because of my pregnancy problems, I had to leave school. I didn’t graduate because I was not able to complete that one class. After, that I had no motivation to go back to school; a decision I always regretted.…
