Why You Should Wear Sunscreen

GENERAL PURPOSE: To persuade my audience.

SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade my audience to wear sunscreen.

CENTRAL IDEA: To persuade my audience that not wearing sunscreen and even wearing the wrong type of sunscreen can be dangerous and deadly, what the solution is to fix this problem, and how the solution can have an impact on everyone.

OUTLINE

I. ATTENTION TO PROBLEM/Introduction

A. Attention getting device: An estimated 9,480 people will die of melanoma in 2013

B. Central idea: Not wearing sunscreen and even wearing the wrong type of sunscreen can be dangerous and deadly, what is the solution to fix this problem, and how the solution can have an impact on everyone including you.

C. Establish credibility and good: Some of you may go out, even for maybe just 15 minutes, without applying sunscreen as well as not reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours. Like you I have made this mistake plenty of times not fully understanding the repercussions of my actions.

D. Preview main points: First I am going to talk to you about how not putting sunscreen on and/or not even having the proper sunscreen can be dangerous and deadly, secondly on how manufacturers should produce sunscreen to protect not only from UVB rays but UVA as well which will help this situation, and finally on how the solution of changing the SPF can help solve the problem.

II. NEED: Skin cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer in the United States. According to Skincancer.org, “An estimated 76,690 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in the US in 2013”. Many people now days do not feel the need to put on sunscreen when going out. If they do put on sunscreen they forget to put it on after sweating heavily, being in the water, or after 2 hours with normal outside daily activities, thus exposing themselves to the harmful rays of the sun, UVA and UVB. Exposure to either one leaves you with the risk of skin cancer.

Transition: Even if they do put on sunscreen there is a good possibility that it is not the correct kind of sunscreen, which protects one from both UVA and UVB rays. According to the Chemist and Druggist magazine article OTC: Sun sense, “Because sunscreens are currently less protective against UVA than UVB, this may be putting people at greater risk of developing melanoma, simply because they are lulled into a false sense of security”.

III. SOLUTION: Most sunscreens will protect against UVB radiation, which causes sunburns and UVA rays which will age your skin. The SPF rating only relates to UVB exposure, which means you are still being exposed to UVA. According to The New York Times article Do Your Skin a Favor: Protect It In Summer, “A product with an S.P.F. of 30 may have a UVA protection rating of only 2”. Which means your skin is not getting the proper protection that it needs and seeing as how UVA radiation causes the most dangerous skin cancer, malignant melanoma, you definitely need protection from UVA rays. Solution: Let’s make all sunscreen with SPF’s that protect from the UVA and UVB exposure, instead of just UVB. So making the SPF pertain to both types of radiation exposure would mean an SPF of 30, protecting us from the UVB rays, would no longer be a protection rating of 2 for UVA. It would be the same SPF for both of the types of radiation exposure. 30=30

IV. VISULAIZATION: So after all these times that you have gone in the sun without protecting your skin, one day you notice something odd that you have never seen before. The gut sinking feeling sets in and you realize you need to get it checked out by your dr. The realization now sinks in about how important sunscreen truly is.

V. Conclusion/CALL TO ACTION

A. Summary of main points: Not putting sunscreen on and/or not even having the proper sunscreen can be dangerous and deadly, second manufacturers should produce sunscreen to protect not only from UVB rays but UVA as well which will help this situation, and finally the solution of changing the SPF can help solve this.

B. Call to action: I urge you to go home and check your sunscreen to make sure that your sunscreen says broad-spectrum, which means it protects from both UVA and UVB rays. If not go out and by some that does. I also urge you to keep some type of broad spectrum sunscreen on you, in a purse/bag/or your car, so that way if you know you are going to be exposed to the sun, you already have it on hand and can apply it.
